Syd's sense of humor

Post by space triangle »

Barrett would later be approached by a Guardian reporter in 2001 for another attempted interview.

The Guardian: Excuse me! I’m writing a piece about Syd Barrett.

Syd Barrett: Who?’

G: Syd Barrett. He used to be in Pink Floyd.

S: Never heard of ‘im. Is he one of them rappers?

G: No. He was a psychedelic genius. Are you Syd Barrett?

S: Leave me alone. I’ve got to get some coleslaw.

[The interview ends.]

Sure, but like many things reported on the Internet this didn't actually happen.

Giving the benefit of the doubt, maybe something got lost in translation to the Australian writers at Cosmic who reproduced this. It's clear enough from Tom Cox's guardian article that he wasn't speaking to Barrett...

Here's the article. https://www.theguardian.com/theobserver ... ew.review1

The questions were asked of a person walking past who may have looked like Syd. The author's conclusion was that he wasn't.

Hmm, yeah I think that article did at least highlight the absurdity of people that went looking for Barrett in his later years, ambushing him whilst he went about his mundane chores.

I should think there were probably a certain number of people who at least kept an eye out for him out of curiousity, and had similar experiences of finding large numbers of late middle-aged, balding, maybe slightly overweight guys out buying groceries or whatever...

Or someone who looked vaguely like Syd. As @scarecrow says, It's not like there is a shortage of overweight bald men in the UK.
