Official 2-album sets: listening experience recommendation

Post by Eclipse »

On discogs.com I found some interesting 2 album sets of Pink Floyd albums that were released in some countries, either in LP, cassette of CD formats.

The ones which interested me the most, were:

Atom Heart Mother / Meddle 2 CD set:

Wish You Were Here / Animals 2 LP set:
https://www.discogs.com/Pink-Floyd-The- ... se/5028314

And there's also the well known A Nice Pair set of Piper and ASOS.

I am mentioning this because it can be an interesting experience to listen to each of the 2-album sets as if it was a full one.
I recommend trying it, for example, while listening through spotify (you can make a playlist, for each set, for example an AHM/Meddle one, and another for WYWH/Animals).
They flow really well!

AHM/Meddle has 1h38 min in total. WYWH/Animals has 1h25min.
It is not so long, so it can be experienced as a full album almost as much we experience double albums, like The Wall or Ummagumma.

Interesting is how the albums from each pair fit well within their respective pairs!

This is an especially interesting one given that Gilmour's original idea for the '75 album was "Shine On" on one side and the songs that became "Dogs" and "Sheep" on the other side.

I've always seen AHM+Meddle as a true double album. The long opening title track in AHM mirrors the long closing track in Meddle, and the songs in between give a good view of their sonic evolution and experimentation of that time.

agree with you both, the experience is greatly enhanced this way,IMO!! :D

Now, look at this 6 album set!

Vol. 1 More / Atom Heart Mother / Meddle ‎

Vol. 2 The Dark Side Of The Moon / Wish You Were Here / Animals
https://www.discogs.com/Pink-Floyd-The- ... e/12472593

You have the band's pastoral side (with More/AHM/Meddle) leading to their spacier sound in vol 2.
More, as one of my favorite albums with its experimental and avant-garde approach in a lot of tracks.
AHM/Meddle/WYWH/Animals as the band in full progressive rock epicness.
DSOTM as their seminal innovative album.

total running time of a MORE/AHM/MEDDLE/DOSTM/WYWH/ANIMALS playlist that emulated the six-album bundle above: 4h32min

EPIC!

CD format has never been properly utilised, and one of the great things about it is the ability to hold a double LP. I know that record companies and Pink Floyd management would never go for this, but here is a consumer friendly idea that would definitely give you a bang for your buck. Standard size CD jewel case has the ability to hold 3 individually visible CDs, plus a full size booklet (I have a few of those triple CD albums at home, three John Williams' Star Wars soundtracks for the original three films for example).

With that in mind, here is a superb 3CD collection:

CD1: A Nice Pair - 79:19 (The Piper at the Gates of Dawn + A Saucerful of Secrets)
CD2: Ummagumma - 86:32
CD3: The Wall - 81:08

p.s.
Yes, CDs can hold 90 plus minutes of music without any problems, and playback is without any issues as well.

yes, that bunch of acoustic tracks like Fearless, Pillow of Winds, If and Fat Old Sun are VERY VEEEERYYYY experimental. Uh huh.
