What is your favourite David Gilmour Solo Studio Album?
I love Roger and David's solo albums, very different creations. But which of David's is your favourite? I love the first two, can't beat a bit of 1980's cheese and over production. Can't get enough of the stuff! But I do rather like On An Island, very laid back and enjoyed seeing it played at the Royal Albert Hall which was pretty epic.
1978 David Gilmour
1984 About Face
2006 On An Island
2015 Rattle That Lock
1978 David Gilmour
1984 About Face
2006 On An Island
2015 Rattle That Lock

Definitely On an Island for me. I have fond memories of discovering that one at school, and I absolutely love the atmosphere of that record. Only thing I'm not as keen on with it is "Take a Breath", as it doesn't quite fit the mood of everything else on the album, but it's a solid track nonetheless.

Davids 1978 album for me - raise my rent is epic. Also I was listening to some wall demos the other day and noticed how similar 'Short and Sweet' on this album is to 'Run like Hell'

The 1978 album by far. It's been one of my favorite albums since I first got it back in the late 70s...

Tough question tbh!
IMPO he's made three tremendous albums; 1978, AF and RTL.
1978 is just a stonking guitar album.
AF is probably his best album (impo) because it's where he really stretched himself playing- and composition-wise. He had a lot of top names appearing plus an A-list house band to back him up.
RTL just has a lot of his sublime playing on it; it's quite strong but also a bit 'safe'.
OAI has a great title track + a couple of others, but also some filler and weaker tracks.
Just my opinion!

It's About Face for me. Very close second is On An Island
1978 solo album I think is sub-par
About Face is genius
On An Island is perfect
Rattle That Lock is underrated

I can't agree on "genius", but it is a way better record than it's given credit for. It sounds like Gilmour was just having a good-ass time recording that one, and there are a lot of really great tunes on it. "Murder" is far and away one of his solo work standouts

I'm known for over-exaggerating a love for an artist or song then backtracking on it days later; About Face isn't genius, but it's his best imo.theaussiefloydian wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 12:01 amI can't agree on "genius", but it is a way better record than it's given credit for. 'Murder', 'All Lovers Are Deranged' and 'Out Of The Blue' really hit me hard

"All Lovers Are Deranged" goes unnecessarily hard.Ashes andDiamonds07 wrote: ↑Wed Mar 13, 2024 2:53 am 'Murder', 'All Lovers Are Deranged' and 'Out Of The Blue' really hit me hard
I'm also big on "Love on the Air" and "In the End". Are they sensationally cheesy? Maybe. But Gilmour does cheesy very well apparently

RTL for me, with In Any Tongue as a favourite track. Although OAI has a couple of really lovely tracks. OAI is a faboulus track and Where We Start, especially wonderful version of it on Live In Gdansk.

So, to overshare...I voted for "Rattle That Lock" because it's the one I can put on and let it play from start to finish without rolling my eyes.
Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut..."On An Island" is one of those albums that I can put on and I feel like I'm transported back to when it came out. I was living in a commercial building with a couple of friends, smack in the middle of our artistic Downtown area, two blocks from the Riverfront. A two-minute walk from the coolest pub (as they called themselves, even though this is UhMurica,) which frequently hosted an Open Mic Night. Far enough away from a nasty breakup that I was beginning to enjoy being single.
It's probably his most Floydian solo album, COULD have been a Floyd album if he'd wanted and I was very excited to see it be as successful as it was as a solo album.

On An Island for me.
I just love how it's more mood than song.
