Stanley Kubrick, the renowned film director, once approached Pink Floyd with a request to use their music from the album 'Atom Heart Mother' for his film 'A Clockwork Orange'. However, Pink Floyd turned down his request.
The reason behind this refusal was quite interesting. Nick Mason, the drummer for Pink Floyd, hinted in a 2018 interview that the band's decision was influenced by their past experience with Kubrick. They felt slighted because they were not allowed to contribute to the soundtrack for Kubrick's earlier film, '2001: A Space Odyssey', a project they would have loved to be a part of.
When Kubrick approached them for 'A Clockwork Orange', he wanted to use their music 'how I want, when I want'. Pink Floyd, however, wanted more clarity and control over how their music would be used. When they didn't get the answers they were looking for, they decided to deny Kubrick's request.
Mason admitted that their decision might sound a bit petulant, but it highlights the desire of both Pink Floyd and Stanley Kubrick to retain complete control over their own work. Despite the missed opportunity for collaboration, both continued to excel in their respective fields.
I love that Stanley used the LP in one scene in the film anyway! haha
