Are they THAT good??? IMO, they are good but they're not an awesome band. I mean, the songs that I really like are Hey Jude, Yesterday, Twists and Shout and Yellow Submarine, but the rest isn't that great. :)
What do you think, do you consider them a 'myth'??? Please vote

The Beatles are very good but their greatness has been blown out of preportion. I don't think of them as mythic by any standards, I just think they created good music, but all that 60's hype has pretty much stuck to them.

Sgt Peppers, Magical Mystery, White Album, Abbey Road and Rubber Soul..other than a few other songs these are the only albums as a whole that i liked from them.

I think the reason that so many younger people fail to see the draw of The Beatles these days is because music is more complicated now than it was at the time...oddly enough, this is largely due to the influence of The Beatles.

My youngest brother once told me that to him, The Beatles' songs sound like "nursery rhymes."

This makes sense to me, only because of what The Beatles did for music in their day. The Beatles pushed the envelope of popular music. They brought the intricacies of "serious" music to rock and roll...intricate harmonies, unusual chord progressions which led to more complicated melodies which still contained hooks strong enough to send the songs to the top of the pop charts.

It's a fact that at one time, the top five songs on the Billboard Pop Chart were Beatles songs...not Myth...not Hype...FACT.

No matter what era, that's a huge accomplishment.

They changed the way popular music sounds...that's not Myth...not Hype...that's FACT.

Say what you want to about them...say that you don't see the appeal, that's fine...that's your opinion...the FACTS bear out that you are, indeed, missing something.

The Beatles are factly a world changing group. Musically and other. I see John Lennon more of a myth figure, as he died prematurely and what not...

I agree. They changed the face of music for the good.
White album ,Revolver ,Abbey Road, Let It Be are classic albums.
Although i prefer their later albums their early stuff changed music forever.

They are a good band, but nothing really speacial. They have some nice songs, but quit a lot bad too. For example: I consider yesterday, let it be, I am the walrus, come together to be very good and funny songs but there is a lot that isn't that special.

Your poll is missing the point for me...

They certainly not THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. If I thought that would be the case, I wouldn't be here, but on a Beatles forum...
But to say they're nothing special is definitely an understatement.

As it is difficult to not agree with facts, I agree with mosespa: they certainly changed music more than we can imagine, viewing from our perspective (we = people who didn't actually live in the '60s).

In the end I chose the middle option cause they are simply not the best imo. But I really like a lot of their music.

The Beatles ARE fantastic.....

I agree. But I chose the first option "They're The BEST!" although there are bands I like more (obviously! :) ) there was just no way I could say they're nothing special. I certainly think that they're probably one of the most important/influential bands in history. They were definitely very influential to me when I was growing up and discovering music.

There should be an intermediary option, though, something like "Although not my favorite, I love the Beatles and they were very important!"

Well, I'm 39 and reached the ending years of the Beatles (even if I was very young) and many of my older friends Brothers played Beatles all day long. I lived in those years when every band was coimpared with the Beatles, but I never saw anything special in them except for Abbey Road and parts of Let it Be.

Don't tell me that's because I lived in a world of much more complex music (which is true), because I'm a fan of the 60's music, including guys as Bob Dylan, Frank Zappa, David Bowie, Cat Stevens, Moody Blues, The Mamas and the Papas, Beach Boys, Arhur Brown, The Who, etc. It's just that I don't find enough strenght in the Beatles music, sound kind of lame and repetitive to me.

So I voted for the second option.

I'm not sure that I understand you here...you say not to mention the complex music you grew up with as the reason why you don't see much in The Beatles...then you go on to list Zappa, Bowie and Moody Blues...definitely some of the more complex music of the day.

And all influenced, as it happens, in one way or another by The Beatles...well...except maybe Dylan.

Dylan was very influenced by The Beatles, and may not even have gone electric if it hadn't been for the fabs. There was a lot of ideas bouncing back and forth in the 60s, and The Beatles were at the centre of it, but almost as important were the works of (in particular) Bob Dylan and Brian Wilson.
That's part of not only what made the 60s great, but what made the music great. It's something a lot of todays musical acts should draw upon in an age where there are so many different musical genre's all trying to be poplar, and all pretty much hating each other.
