The best off

Post by David Smith »

Just wondering what everyone here though of Flickering Flame, the best of Roger Waters.

It was the first waters album i got, so i really wasn't to impressed. i though while some songs were really good (to much rope, 3 wishes) the Radio Kaos stuff was poorly chosen (Me or Him is by far the albums best song) and the album had next to nothing from PACOHH which i now feel to be his strongest work.

Flickering Flame i think is an awful song, although the definite highlight is the new piece Each Small Candle.

Overall, it's got some moments, but as a best off it's really not a strong collection and a number of alternatives could have been chose over much of the existing tracks.

I don't have that one although I have got Flickering Flame as an mp3.. good stuff. Poor sound quality..

I would just rather put in Amused to Death or Pros and Cons as opposed to listening to any "Best Of" from Roger..

I put in ATD last nite and really did forget how good it was.. and also appreciate it more every time I listen. It's really an underrated record.. Some GREAT moments on that record.

I won Flickering Flame off a radio competition (which reimnds me, i should check the website to see if theres any more freebies i can grab)

I enjoy the album, and I like the new work, even Lost Boys Calling (I also got the final version of that song with Eddie Van Halen on guitar, its a helluva lot better)
although i Do agree with you David, in saying that the KAOS stuff was porrly choosen, i disagree with your song choice, and personally, Me or Him is my least favourite song on that album. Sunset Strip would have been better than Radio Waves, surely (doubly so as it is the only song on that album that has a 'solo' of some sort.. well, sort of a solo :P)

I like the inclusion of Towers of Faith and Knocking on Heavens Door

This is what Echoes should have been - a best of, intersperced with rare tracks and oddities

I never bothered importing a copy. The whole album comes off as one of those deals with the record companies. At least it had some stuff that was rather obscure...

...Although I had all of those songs in mp3 format (Exception: FF Demo, although I had a live performance of FF) before the album even came out

I'm hoping that the reason that only the demo version of "Lost Boys Calling" was on the best of, was that the finished version is being saved for the new album. From what Roger has said in interviews, both "Each Small Candle", and "Flickering Flame", are slated for the album, so you never know.
I don't listen to the best of that much, mainly because Roger's solo albums are much better a one continuous listening experiance. Besides I thought it was a bad idea to start the album with a Dylan cover, even if it was a good cover. And also because IMHO there already was a Roger Waters best of, it's called AMUSED TO DEATH.

Amused by The Pros?

Post by Stiggs »

I like all of Roger's stuff...least preferred is Radio Kaos, then Amused To Death (note that I'm not counting When The Wind Blows), then In The Flesh, then Pros And Cons. I like PACOHH the most because it's strong lyrically and the music keeps me interested. ATD was very lyrically strong but the music lost my interest and I find it difficult to listen to the album the whole way through at times. I don't get tired of Pros and Cons, to me it's up there with WYWH.

Pros and cons was also my favourite piece of work as a solo artist to come from the mind of Roger Waters. Haven heard all 3 studio albums i thought long and hard and compiled what i would put on the best off. This is going by the original stipulation of it being 12 tracks. In no particular order:

1) Moving away from the border
2) Too much rope
3) Me or him
4) Three wishes
5) Every Stranger's eyes
6) Each Small Candle (if this is anything to go by his next album's going to be the best yet)
7) Late home tonight parts 1 and 2
8) Sexual revolution
9) Radio Waves
10) Nobody home (berlin wall cd)
11) Knocking on Heaven's door
12) Amused to death

Only one thing bothers me with PACOHH: the balance btween Roger softvoice and his "screaming". For my taste, he does scream too much. The Final Cut has a better balance.

ACK!!! GAH!!! NOOOO!!!!

I think that Radio Waves should have been ommitted in favor of something from Pros and Cons, which really didn't get enough representation. Maybe Running Shoes or Go Fishing.
