Desert Island Discs

Post by rollinder »

Did anyone get to hear David on Desert Island Discs this morning?
I wanted to try and catch it but I was forced to watch Ian Duncan Smith on the religious eqivilant instead. Going to try and catch Friday's repeat (9:00 - 9:45am Radio 4) - not sure if it's edited though.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/des ... iscs.shtml has the list of his choices.

What all happens on desert island discs, is it just a guy saying songs he likes or what?

I will record it and put it on the site. :-) I have 17 mins of it from a friend. Interesting stuff. Especially concerning if Gilmour considers himself a musician or a lyricist. Some embarrasing questions about things as well.   Perhaps I will encode what i have of it and share it on the forum?

One minute he is talking about how Floyd is just a pop group that isn't a huge deal, and then he's talking about how he nursed poor Rick and Nick, like they were little infants or something.

What a farce...

Yeah, I'm really crying for "poor" Nick and Rick. Nick must have felt so "bruised" while driving one of his ferraris and Rick must have felt terribly bad while sailing his yatch in Greece

David Gilmour: "Love Is A Drug" as they say, and those massive audiences are a drug. And it's very nice to be loved that much. I think a lot of people are kind of addicted..."

Might explain the 1999-2002-tours of an ex-Floydmember.

As Roger himself once said:

"I still feel the desperate need for acceptance and applause that I felt as a child. It was a major motivation toward learning to play the guitar and starting to warble. You may become more comfortable with who you are and may judge yourself less and less, but the child inside lives for this forever."

However, I think it is worth noting that Roger played some shows in front of 3000 people during his ITF Tours. That's not a "massive audience."

When asked a while ago why he's started touring again Brian Wilson replied "Because I Don't Have Too Any More". I get the impression that's the reason why both Roger and David have made recent returns to the stage too, albiet both in different forms to their Pink Floyd days.
