I’ve Been Mad for Fu***ing Years – Dark Side of the Moon Quote
During the recording process of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon album, Roger Waters scribbled down some questions to ask people who he then recorded. You can hear various answers on the album. One of the most noticeable is the “I’ve been mad for fucking years” section during the song Speak To Me as answered by road manager Chris Adamson.
This line is spoken by the band’s road manager, Chris Adamson. The song is an instrumental and serves as the opening track of the album. It features various sound effects and snippets of spoken word, including the line as mentioned. The voices and sounds in “Speak to Me” are references to themes and segments that appear later in the album.
Audio equipment Collector Chris Hewitt, who runs CH Vintage Audio that appeared in Nick Mason’s recent open garden event at Middlewick House, recently caught up with Chris Adamson and had the pleasure of recording him speak his famous line whilst amongst the Dark Side of the Moon tour PA equipment.

Roger Waters’ Questions from Dark Side of the Moon
Within the Immersion edition of Dark Side of the Moon there is a packet with the title Questions for Assorted Lunatics where Roger describes the process of recording answers to his questions. Various people including Paul McCartney, were asked. Chris would have been asked, “Do you ever think you are going mad?”.

Photos from Chris Hewitt meeting Chris Adamson
Former Pink Floyd road manager Chris Adamson met up with CH Vintage Audio proprietor Chris Hewitt. Here are some photos of them having dinner, looking over the Dark Side of the Moon PA system and sitting in the Avis van that the band would rent to transport their equipment. They would also hire the much bigger vans later on.
Chris Hewitt told NPF, “Chris Adamson has lived in the USA for some years where he has been a top production manager for live events. Whilst visiting the UK he wanted to see some of the original Dark Side and Pompeii gear he cut his teeth on along with Peter Watts and it was a chance to get more information for my volume four large Rock Sound systems book which like the other volumes will have an extensive Floyd section”.

Here are a couple of photos of Pink Floyd road manager Chris Adamson in the 1970s on the road with the band. Must have been a great gig to get being on the road with the Pink Floyd during their mega fame period.
