“Five Man Pink Floyd” Photos up for Auction
A collection of five rare original black and white press photographs of Pink Floyd from 1966-1968 is set to be auctioned. The collection includes five man Pink Floyd photos from their early years:
- An image stamped December 12, 1968, by Universal Pictorial Press, promoting the release of “Point Me To The Sky.”
- A general group shot and a solo observation of Syd Barrett.
- A band shot of a contract signing with manager Peter Jenner.
- A sheet featuring 16 smaller prints of various poses of the expanded lineup with David Gilmour, alongside three later reprinted promotional shots.
These items are preserved in their original mail-out cardboard envelope, bearing an EMI Records sticker and addressed directly to Rick Sanders, who collated them during his research for a book on Pink Floyd.
What an unusual auction to pop up out of the blue covering a key moment in Pink Floyd’s history where David Gilmour had joined the band whilst Syd Barrett was still in the group. I would love to see a photo book of all these five man Pink Floyd photos pop up one day! I think that would be a great thing to do with the pictures, if copyrights permit such a thing.

Why was there a five man Pink Floyd?
The story of the “Five Man Pink Floyd” revolves around a brief period in early 1968 when Syd Barrett and David Gilmour were both part of the band simultaneously. This transition period was marked by Syd Barrett’s deteriorating mental health, which led to his erratic behaviour and eventual departure from the band in April 1968.
