April 24th – Pompeii Film at the Cinema
Fans will be able to enjoy the new Pompeii film in stunning 4k video quality at cinemas around the world on Thursday 24th April 2025. There is a website where you can find participating cinemas here. Judging by some of the videos shared by Pink Floyd officially, it is going to look fantastic, the images are so clear and the balance of colours looks great. Its not just eyes that will be amazed. The sound remix by Steven Wilson is also going to help transform the experience in the cinema and on the home releases too next month.

8th May – Home Formats Released
This wouldn’t be a Pink Floyd release unless the release date had been pushed back! Originally slated for Friday 2nd May release, it is now looking like Thursday 8th May instead.
In terms of the formats available, its great that there will be an official soundtrack to the film released. Previously you had to get the VHS out. So that is a positive. Also fun, but not as positive, is the newly polished content is released across multiple formats. In other words, some of the additional bonus material only appears on certain formats. This encourages people to buy more than one format, like a definitive Blu-Ray. Personally, I am going with a Blu-Ray and LP set.

Here are the formats, click a link to find out more and/or make a purchase. Take a look at the original Pompeii news announcement for more of an analysis of the formats.

Video Clips
Until today, I had been trying not to watch any of the video clips. I want to keep the element of surprise when I watch in the cinema in Liverpool on 24th April. Therefore I am sharing these videos below, taken from the official Pink Floyd YouTube page, without actually watching them first. Take a look at the Official Pompeii Playlist for more videos.
Up first is the full version of Echoes
We also have more of a sound preview of Careful with that Axe
There are more clips on the official YouTube Page as mentioned.
Rolling Stone Magazine Interview
Nick Mason is very keen to be promoting the new Pompeii release. Not seen much from David Gilmour yet. Perhaps its because David is in the studio working on his new 2025 album and tour. Nick Mason mentions in this interview that he hasn’t spoken to David for a while. Sad really. He speaks to Roger more.
The Rolling Stone article features an interview with Pink Floyd’s drummer, Nick Mason, discussing the legacy and uniqueness of the band’s iconic “Live at Pompeii” concert film. Mason reflects on the film’s concept of substituting an audience with the remarkable venue of Pompeii’s Roman amphitheater, creating a distinctive atmosphere. He shares insights into the band’s creative process during the early 1970s, including their transition after Syd Barrett’s departure and the development of their signature sound showcased in albums like “Meddle.”
The article also highlights the film’s IMAX re-release, emphasizing its cultural significance and the band’s innovative approach to live performances. Mason recounts the challenges and memorable moments of filming, including the integration of volcanic landscapes and studio footage. The interview provides a glimpse into Pink Floyd’s artistic evolution and the enduring impact of “Live at Pompeii” on their legacy.
I have included three of the questions and answers below. There are loads more in the article below to read. I particularly enjoy where Nick suggests Sony will do a better job of releasing material that Pink Floyd did, due to the arguing. Fingers crossed there will be lots more releases!

A Selection of Quotes from the Interview
What do you remember about Pompeii then?
We weren’t there for very long. I went back [in 2023] and could remember almost nothing. The town’s changed a bit. It’s more remarkable now. I think it sounds absurd, but I think we took it for granted. In a way, I seem to remember less about Pompeii and the movie than I do about almost any other period of Pink Floyd.
But I remember the dust. Because it was a bit gritty and hot, it gave the film atmosphere. It was an alternative to having an audience, and it worked really well. I believe that we did very little cutting and redoing pieces. It was almost like a live gig.
The footage of “One of These Days” mostly features you playing drums.
I’ve heard a story that they lost some of the rolls of tape, particularly for that song, and the only take that remained was the camera that was on me, so I got this free ride for more or less the entire song. But that may not be true; it may just be that Adrian just thought I was so great.
Re-releasing the Pompeii film back into theaters, and specifically IMAX, is the first big endeavor since Sony bought Pink Floyd’s catalogue. Do you have hopes for what more they could do with it?
No, but I think I’m still feeling that the catalog sale was a good idea. I think Sony will actually look after it better than we would. We’d spend too much time arguing. And I’ve yet to see exactly how it all works, but at the moment I’m thinking this is a good thing.
Pink Floyd PA in Barnsley
If you happen to be in the Barnsley area of North West England, there is the added bonus of listening to the new Pompeii film on Pink Floyd’s original sound system! Parkway Cinema in Barnsley will show the new film on 24th April 2025. In conjunction with CH Vintage Audio this will be the only cinema in the world to have the actual Pink Floyd Pompeii Sound system at the screening of the film.
