Sam Brown, full name Samantha Brown, is an English singer, songwriter, and musician known for her soulful, jazz-inflected vocal style.

Born on October 7, 1964, in Stratford, East London, she grew up immersed in music, as the daughter of renowned musician Joe Brown and session singer Vicki Brown. She broke through in the late 1980s with the hit single “Stop!” and her debut album of the same name, which resonated with audiences through its blend of blue-eyed soul, pop, and soft rock.

Beyond her success as a solo artist, Brown has built a reputation as a highly sought-after session and backing vocalist. She has lent her voice to a wide array of prominent artists—ranging from Gary Moore to George Harrison, Jon Lord, and even Nick Cave. One of her most memorable contributions came with Pink Floyd. During the band’s Division Bell Tour, she performed backing vocals, most notably delivering a powerful rendition of “The Great Gig in the Sky.” Her work with Pink Floyd, including a standout performance at the windy and wet Knebworth show in 1990 (which is featured on the live album “Pulse”), has left a lasting impression on fans of the band.

Her collaboration with Pink Floyd is just one facet of her diverse career. Over the years, Sam Brown has become synonymous with a richly emotive style that bridges the gap between solo chart success and invaluable contributions to live performances and studio sessions by some of rock and pop’s most enduring acts. After facing serious issues with her voice in 2007 — which led her to step back from recording and live performances — she later remerged in 2023 with a new album, marking another chapter in her resilient musical journey.

Superb live vocal performance by Sam Brown on The Great Gig in the Sky from Pink Floyd’s 1994 Pulse release. She joined David Gilmour at the Colombian Volcano Appeal Benefit Concert on 9th February 1986 which I think is their first performance together.
