The Madcap Next Door – What Living Next Door to Syd Barrett Was Like

This article considers some of the points raised in an article published in the Mail on Sunday tabloid newspaper in Great Britain. It sheds light on the life of Syd Barrett once he returned home from London to Cambridge. It seems Cambridge was not as quiet and idyllic as one may have thought! Discuss on forum. ———————————————————————–     Article from Mail on Sunday If an article published by the British tabloid newspaper The Mail on Sunday – and the gentleman who wrote the story – are to be believed, then it would seem Roger Keith (Syd) Barrett was not quite the quiet recluse (who lived at number 6 St Margaret’s Square in Cambridge for the final 25 years of his life) that everyone thought he was. Former next door neighbour David Sore from number 7 (it’s a cul de sac so 7 is next door) apparently shared some of his memories...

Before They Were Floyd By Keith Jordan

A brief look at the bands the Pink Floyd members were part of before the Pink Floyd formed and started going places! Feel free to discuss this article on the forum when read. ———————————————————————————— Being in the right place at the right time and meeting the right people seems key to success in the music industry. A love of the new music pouring in from the USA in the form of Rhythm and Blues numbers, which allowed young teenagers to rebel against their parents Jazz and classical collections, would have inspired young men the country over to pick up a guitar and form a R&B band! The death of Roger Barrett’s father and the flying of the nest of his siblings meant that Barrett’s liberal mother allowed up to 30 young people at a time to invade a room in her house to jam and listen to the new music,...

An Interview With The Nice’s Davy O’List By Keith Jordan & Davy O’List

An Interview With The Nice’s Davy O’List By Keith Jordan & Davy O’List

Davy O’List formerly from the band The Nice (with ELP keyboardist Keith Emerson) and The Attack is a man of many talents and has worked with some great people throughout his career. Whilst on tour with The Nice as part of the Jimi Hendrix Experience Tour between November and December 1967, Davy helped out with lead guitar for The Pink Floyd when Syd Barrett was unable to play due to drugs, symptoms of schizophrenia and perhaps his “no rules” attitude to life! Shortly after in January 1968, David Gilmour joined Pink Floyd. Davy has been kind enough to do an interview with NPF about his past and his future.  He is currently working on his new bands self-titled album “Second Thoughts” (as of 2006). Grab yourself a coffee and enjoy the trip! ——————————————————— 1. The Attack was a short-lived yet very interesting outfit deriving from the sixties psychedelic experiment. Do tell...

The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story Cover Final

Creating The Syd Barrett Portrait By Mark Wilkinson

Mark Wilkinson is a talented artist responsible for great paintings in the sphere of music artwork. He did some striking images for Marillion/Fish! He was commissioned to do the DVD Cover for The Pink Floyd and Syd Barrett Story DVD (American version) and will be auctioning off the original this month! There are also limited edition Giclée prints available from his site. Mark guides us through his thoughts concerning the production of the DVD artwork below. ——————————————————– Imagine hearing ‘Piper At The Gates Of Dawn’ for the first time. Back in ‘67 there were fewer frames of reference than there are today for any new band. In fact there were no antecedents really for this album back then. How often does something come along that is so unique that it takes your breath away? This record existed in a vacuum…or so it seemed to me as a kid of 15....

Syd Barrett and The Beatles: 1966-1969 by John J. Olivar

Syd Barrett and The Beatles: 1966-1969 by John J. Olivar

Syd Barrett and The Beatles: 1966-1969 by John J. Olivar The Pink Floyd appear at dawn, Syd Barrett on the right: ’14 Hour Technicolor Dream,’ 1967. An often-debunked rumor has suggested that Syd Barrett participated in a version of the Beatles song “What’s the New Mary Jane.” While the chronology below does not attempt to prove that Barrett played on a Beatles track, it may show that the notion is not so far-fetched, and has a bit more to it than just bootleggers’ mislabelings. I’ve tried to list all reliably documented instances of Barrett at a location simultaneously with the Beatles. Barrett and Beatles session information comes from Parker and Lewisohn, respectively (see Reference Materials). Songs are identified by their finished titles. All sessions (except those on 12 October, 1967) took place at EMI Studios, 3 Abbey Road, St. John’s Wood, London, NW8. Gathering The Evidence 15 October, 1966 –...
