It's a general music discussion that's why.Ivan_2068 wrote:What's Rap doing in a Pink Floyd Forum?
Please, IMHO RAP, Hip Hop, Girls/boys Bands and Top 40 POP are the same thing that can be described by a rour letter word very similar to RAP.
There's no musicality, imagination, inteligent lyrics, variations, it's no music IMO.

German krautrock/prog legends Faust released a single last summer with the underground hip hip act D?lek, and they're also making an album together, evil or what...

I'm sorry about the long MESSAGE but I felt like I had to make a point here.
First lets split Hiphop/Rap from Girls/Boysbands. They have just as much in common as Pink Floyd and Britney Spears do. It's just a different genre.
Then the Top 40 POP: Every artist in every genre can produce Top 40 POP. That is not a genre. It's just a matter of choosing to make concessions, believing your payroll is more important than your creative process. Some rappers do that, a lot of boybands do that.
Hell, even Pink Floyd did that, when they released "Take it Back"...
So now we have Hiphop/Rap standing on it's own to be judged, seems fair to me. You say: There's no musicality, imagination, inteligent lyrics, variations...
No offense meant, but you really don't know what you're talking about
The Message
Broken glass everywhere
People pissing on the stairs, you know they just don't care
I can't take the smell, I can't take the noise
Got no money to move out, I guess I got no choice
Rats in the front room, roaches in the back
Junkie's in the alley with a baseball bat
I tried to get away, but I couldn't get far
Cause the man with the tow-truck repossessed my car
My son said daddy I don't wanna go to school
Cause the teacher's a jerk, he must think I'm a fool
And all the kids smoke reefer, I think it'd be cheaper
If I just got a job, learned to be a street sweeper
I dance to the beat, shuffle my feet
Wear a shirt and tie and run with the creeps
Cause it's all about money, ain't a damn thing funny
You got to have a con in this land of milk and honey
They push that girl in front of a train
Took her to a doctor, sowed the arm on again
Stabbed that man, right in his heart
Gave him a transplant before a brand new start
I can't walk through the park, cause it's crazy after the dark
Keep my hand on the gun, cause they got me on the run
I feel like an outlaw, broke my last fast jaw
Hear them say you want some more, livin' on a seasaw
Don't push me, cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to loose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
Standing on the front stoop, hangin' out the window
Watching all the cars go by, roaring as the breezes blow
Crazy lady, livin' in a bag
Eating out of garbage piles, used to be a fag-hag
Search and test a tango, skips the life and then go
To search a prince to see the last of senses
Down at the peepshow, watching all the creeps
So she can tell the stories to the girls back home
She went to the city and got so so so ditty
She had to get a pimp, she couldn't make it on her own
Don't push me, cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to loose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
A child was born, wih no state of mind
Blind to the ways of mankind
Got a smile on you with these burning tooth
Cause only god knows what you go through
You grow in the ghetto, living second rate
And your eyes will sing a song of deep hate
The places you play and where you stay
Looks like one great big alley way
You'll admire all the numberbook takers
Dogpitchers, pushers and the big money makers
Driving big cars, spending twenties and tens
And you wanna grow up to be just like them
Smugglers, scrambles, burglars, gamblers
Pickpockets, peddlers and even pan-handlers
You say I'm cool, I'm no fool
But then you wind up dropping out of highschool
Now you're unemployed, all null 'n' void
Walking around like you're pretty boy Floyd
Turned stickup kid, look what you done did
Got send up for a eight year bid
Now your man is took and you're a Maytag
Spend the next two years as an undercover fag
Being used and abused, and served like hell
Till one day you was find hung dead in a cell
It was plain to see that your life was lost
You was cold and your body swung back and forth
But now your eyes sing the sad sad song
Of how you lived so fast and died so young
My brother's doing fast on my mother's T.V.
Says she watches to much, is just not healthy
All my children in the daytime, Dallas at night
Can't even see the game or the Sugar Ray fight
Bill collectors they ring my phone
And scare my wife when I'm not home
Got a bum education, double-digit inflation
Can't take the train to the job, there's a strike at the station
Me on King Kong standin' on my back
Can't stop to turn around, broke my sacroiliac
Midrange, migrained, cancered membrane
Sometimes I think I'm going insane, I swear I might hijack a plane!
Don't push me, cause I'm close to the edge
I'm trying not to loose my head
It's like a jungle sometimes, it makes me wonder
How I keep from going under
You really should dig around more in your local record store... opinions like this can keep you from discovering a lot of good music.Ivan_2068 wrote:Please, IMHO RAP, Hip Hop, Girls/boys Bands and Top 40 POP are the same thing that can be described by a rour letter word very similar to RAP.

Don't rule out the entire genre
well,
Most of the rap might be crap.... and i don't disagree.
But there's quality in everything.
Boybands and girlbands might be the worst thing that has happend to this planet since the holocaust of world war 2, but it does mean to rule out the entire pop brigade.
I do find that some of the lyrics of eminem are interesting and they do have a lot of meaning in it.
I haven't heard much of rap because after listening to to Pink Floyd 8 years back i have never looked back..... other than classic rock.
Bottom line is..... Don't be prejudiced, Hate people for what they are.

I like it, depends on who?s rapping though...for example, I like some of Cypress Hill songs, like Tequila Sunrise, Lowrider. I like Jay-Z?s It?s a hard knock life version....I don?t like Eminem.....

After a couple of months I had the chance to read this thread again and foundthis answer to an old post, that's why I'm replying even if the time has passed.
Maybe my poor english wasn't clear enough for you, but I was meaning all this different genres and/or styles in my opinion have the same low musical quality and can be described by the word CRAP, what I still believe.
It's clear for anybody that Rap and Boys or Girls bands are two absolutely different genres that IMO have only one thing in common, both suck.
I hate POP, Hip Hop, Rap, Girls/boys bands just the same. If you want to say I'm prog' snob, probably you're right, and I'm proud about it. Of course there are exceptions, but too few for my taste.

To be honest there are too many prog, classic rock or classical albums that I haven't bought yet even if I know for sure I like, that I don't have the time, money or interest to dig into hundreds of cheesy Pop, Rap or Hip Hop albums to find one I like. You really should dig around more in your local record store... opinions like this can keep you from discovering a lot of good music.

RAP SUCKS
Rap sucks!! I am sick and tired of hearing all of this hoopty machines riding round with their basses kicked up wide open!! I am a 46 yr. old w/male and my 15 yr. son listens to rap {also PINK FLOYD} and I think that the words are sending the wrong message to young people!! I have heard some songs that I like from EMINEIM, LINKIN PARK, and a few more but unless the song has cussing, talking about killing a cop, or raping women, it is just the wrong message for young people or their culture!! Especially the young black males
