No. Torry does not deserve a writing credit in this case, because the song was almost completed when she added wailing to the record. What she did was no more than, say, adding a guitar or keyboard solo to the work. By adding her name as a writing credit, it implies that she was a major player in developing the structure, tone and feel of the song.
If, however, you do believe that Torry deserves a writing credit, then I propose relisting the Dark Side of the Moon album as follows:
1. Speak to Me (Mason/Waters/roadie)
2. Breathe (Waters/Gilmour/Wright)
3. On the Run (Gilmour/Waters/roadie)
4. Time (Mason/Waters/Wright/Gilmour/Parsons)
5. The Great Gig in the Sky (Wright/Torry/Parsons/roadie)
6. Money (Waters/Gilmour/Parry)
7. Us and Them (Wright/Waters/Parry/roadie)
8. Any Colour You Like (Gilmour/Mason/Wright/Waters)
9. Brain Damage (Waters/Gilmour)
10. Eclipse (Waters/roadie)
(or something like that). Obviously, the above is pretty silly. A songwriting credit, by definition, is for someone who writes the song and its structure, not one who simply turns up and plays (screams) a few notes, however good or effective they may be.
I believe that an acknowledgement of performance as part of the liner notes is ample in this case. As it is, since 2005 (or whenever the court case was won), it is implied that Clare Torry was a major player around Pink Floyd at the time, when in actual fact she was simply in an adjacent studio and happened to be around to complete a task as set by the band.
Does Clare Torry deserve a writing credit for GGITS?

I fully agree with this.thehumanzoo wrote:A songwriting credit, by definition, is for someone who writes the song and its structure, not one who simply turns up and plays (screams) a few notes, however good or effective they may be.
Claire Torry doesn't deserve a songwriter credit for "Great Gig" any more than David Gilmour deserves songwriter credits for each and every Roger Waters' song he played a solo for, including most of "The Final Cut".

Yes. I will credit anybody who can vocally equal the melody and make this song as emotional/memorable as it is. Would it be the same without her?

much as i enjoy GGITS - what clare torry did was basically an improv , and every version of this has been a copy of the improv. if she had sat down and written the notes she was going to sing then she would deserve a writing credit IMHO. she didnt and therefore doesnt.
i can hum along to numerous pink floyd numbers, but i dont get a writing credit no matter how big my audience.

Anyway, I read this whole thread. She doesn't deserve a credit based on your discussions NPFers.
