Darkside Play on BBC Radio 2 - August 2013

Post by Keith Jordan »

Watch a special visual trailer, made by Aardman Animations of Wallace and Gromit fame, previewing Radio 2′s Darkside drama, which you can hear on Bank Holiday Monday at 10pm. Celebrating 40 years of Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon, legendary playwright Sir Tom Stoppard has penned this fantastical story based on themes from the seminal album and stars a stellar cast. Featuring Bill Nighy, Rufus Sewell and Adrian Scarborough, with the lead roles played by Olivier Award-winning Iwan Rheon (Misfits) and stage actress Amaka Okafor (The Garbage King).

While I rarely post, I do want to say that I do read and much appreciate your website and postings.

Located in Canada, I have a gadget on my desktop (Win7) that plays about 67 U.K. radio stations (and, unfortunately, ONLY U.K. stations) including 11 BBC variations. Hope it suffices for the broadcast!

The trailer is simply brilliant.

It captures so much about "Floyd"...Storm, disintegration, materialism and abstract.

On Monday, as part of the evening, they are also replaying part of the Producers sessions with Richard Allinsom and Steve Levine which in itself is a must listen documentary. Add to that a brand new play based on one of their best albums...it's going to be a good night for radio and all of us nutjob Pink Floyd fans !

Apparently David Gilmour will also listen to the play for the first time on Monday evening, so we are in good company! ( sources say he wants to get the live vibe!)

I shall be listening via Sky+ which has the added benefit of being able to record the broadcast.

Lava lamp on standby !

I discovered it by accident when I was listening to a Hendrix documentary on radio 2 a few years back. The recording is then stored in your planner alongside all the TV recordings.

Sounds to me like the inspiration for the narration for this trailer comes from the end narration of The Body documentary. Probably a coincidence but if not, a nice touch.

International listeners can listen live from the BBC Radio 2 homepage apparently. Can someone give that a go now outside of UK and let me know it definitely works?

Also, here is how you can submit a song to the playlist for the Now Playing two hour program that is broadcast before Darkside radio drame from 8-10pm on Monday 26th August...

Indeed, it has been a good while since something creatively new has come along in Pink Floyd world! Im rather looking forward to it, should be interesting to see the full Aardman Animations video too.

Just need to find a link for that...

I couldn't easily see a link to the animation.

As it is, I am going to go old school for the first listen and treat it purely as a radio play !
