Placebo

Post by simpledumbpilot »

These questions are really directed to Anna-Roza (I was worried about hijacking the Robert Palmer thread :D ), but if anyone else has any thoughts on this band please share them. OK, so the questions are....

Have you heard their cover of Kate Bush's Running Up That Hill? It really is an incredibly moving atmospheric version?

Also, I dont suppose you know who wrote ''Been Smoking Too Long'' do you? On the ''Teeenage Angst'' single its just credited as Anonymous, Id love to checkout the original.

And the rest of you Floyd fans might want to checkout their cover of Dark Globe that Anna mentioned, I think they do the song a good service. Same goes for I Feel You but as a Depeche Mode obsessed freak for 22 years I guess I would say that :D

Glad here is a thread for Placebo... I like this band very much, not only because of my androgyny-fetish  But that's a long story...
So now, only replies for your questions:
I haven't heard that Kate Bush cover, and I didn't know they did it! Wow, that's - IMHO - most touching of her song, incredible, and I'm very curious how would Brian's voice sound in it...

I know that "Been Smoking Too Long" was recorded earlier by Nick Drake on his "Time Of No Reply" album (1986), probably it's his song.

Wait.... Wait!!
I reminded myself that lately they've released the new version of "Sleeping With Ghost" album with the second CD with covers, new or from b-sides (I love Boney M. "Daddy Cool", from "The Bitter End" single).
I am checking their official site: http://www.placeboworld.co.uk
Here they are! Small, 30-sec. samples of Gainsbourg's "Ballad of Melody Nelson" and "Running Up That Hill"
   My God!!! It's really amazing, it made me tremble

I MUST HAVE THIS CD!!!! The only problem is, I already have the album, and don't want to buy it twice only because of this bonus disc...
There is also the Pixies cover, The Smiths cover...
I know they covered also Nirvana's beautiful "All Apologies", but it's not released :(

Nope, but their cover of The Smiths' Big Mouth Strikes Again is HORRIBLE! :x

Eh, anyways, Placebo have always been in the "alright, but nothing special"-category for me. Saw them live back in '97 at a festival in Finland, and they were quite decent back then too...

I've got it! I've got it! :D

C'est magnifique!!!

I can't remember when was the last time I got so touched by a song... When Brian sings: "And if I only could I'd make a deal with God and I'd get him to swap our places..." it sounds so emotional and true... And the music arrangement is also brilliant. Simply beautiful. You must listen to it!!!!

It's possibly traditional - don't know who organally did/wrote it but theres a home recording o it by Nick Drak (from arround 68/69) on Time of No Reply

Just checked CDDB and the only results for it were Nick, Placebo and a covers album by Martin Hederos & Martin Hellberg (who ever they are)

I found this quote on a random fansite and thought it was pretty funny...Especially, because people are always asking me, "why does Brian sing 'Jesus Loves me'?"

At V97 between songs, Brian started singing a really sweet version of 'Jesus Loves Me'. You know the song, it goes 'Yes Jesus loves me cos the bible tells me so'. Anyhow, he was singing it and someone threw a can of beer and it just missed him, he had to duck out of the way. He went back to the mike, pointed a very accusing finger and said 'Jesus does NOT love you motherf***er!'. - Brian Molko.
Cracked me up..

apparently it was written by Robyn Frederick who knew him briefly arround 68 - before he had a recording contract.

Thanks for finding that out Rollinder, its much appreciated, I'll have to track down some alternate versions of the track now as I really like it.

And Anna-Rosa, glad you liked the Running Up That Hill cover, from your previous posts I figured you might be into it, it really is something special. I think its exactly what a cover version should be, an alternative rather than a copy, its almost like a whole new song, superb.

Good to see theres quite a few Placebo fans around here. Has anyone noticed the intro to ''Taste In Men'' sounds like a treated sample of the intro to ''Let There Be More Light''? Given that Placebo covered ''Dark Globe'' its possible that they are fans and it could well be, does anyone know for sure?
