Every Russian adaptation I've seen is strong. Because they have very strong actors, trained on a very strong basis. Every second of my most fav actors ever is Russian, same goes to movies, and every other art, except for sculpture :)

Russian school in movies is one of the strongest ever in my opinion, just that western Europeans don't appreciate it much.

What's wrong with Russian sculptors?

1. unfortunately, there's not much integration :(

2.Whether they stole from Western sculptors, not only adding nothing, but also doing it not hmm impressive, or do a so-called "socialistic realism" (pro-communism stuff) . but that's only for the sculptors :)

Wow, I haven't posted in this thread since I made it. :( I agree with you guys, I wouldn't like to see a movie about Syd; the chances of it being "good" aren't very good, and although it would bring some new people to listen to him, they will always think of a drug crazed maniac when hearing his music. Thats not good.

I used to like Dune until I read the book and realized that the book is a masterpiece, and the movie is crap compared to it. That's why now I never watch the movies that were made upon books I've already read, like last year's Perfume.
"Fear and Loathing in Las Vagas"... Both the book and movie--I thought--were briliant.

Johnny Depp does get really involved in his roles. He lived in Hunter's basement for a few months--I believe. He studied Keith Richards for "Pirates of the Caribean" because he visualized a pirate as a modern day rockstar. He might be old, but he still looks young. I think he could pull it off.

You reckon? At the moment he is 20 year older than Barret was when recording his last material and twice Barrets age when he left Pink Floyd

Depp's a good actor in my opinion. Definitely goes out on a limb with the characters he plays, But I agree with you all:
DON'T LET HOLLYWEIRD TOUCH IT!! It will turn into a piece of sensationalized crap. Let the Brit's do it in style; get RRosemary on board as a creative consultant/executive producer. This will make it real. The good & the bad of Syd Barrett, what he means to fan's, what people who saw him play thought of him, maybe some other x girlfriends, old non-Floyd bandmates we haven't heard from yet, hell maybe his brothers could talk to, who knows. Make it a docu-drama but not a "Behind the music" type show either. Hell, I'LL DIRECT IT!!!! Oh, & talk to some of the other group members that the Floyd use to tour with: Roy Wood of the MOVE, Steve Howe of TOMORROW, DONOVAN, TOWNSHEND< McCARTNEY, there are LOADS of people they could talk to.

I live in Cambridge and was lucky enough to be at the first cheffins auction of syd belongings, and i know that johnny depp was one of the phone bidders, and bought quite a bit. I also know that he was very interested in syd house.

a bit off topic but I thought it may interest some of you!

I was also lucky enough to see Syd/Roger many times in Cambridge (i live around the corner from where he lived) I even told some kids of for hastling him once! Syd/Roger did'nt even react to their dumb questions...or to me telling them off!!

I dont think a movie about Syd will or could be made, nobody really knew the real man, other than the apochryphal bullshit written about him and perpetuated, and the mischevious characteristics he let people believe.

His sister Rosemary would have to be the primary consultant along with Peter Jenner or Andrew King!

Having said that the bio pic Control about Ian Curtis from Joy Division was truly brilliant!,so it can be done if every thing falls in to place.
Johny Depp is a brilliant chameleon and a wonderful actor, but like the Ian Curtis film it would need an unknown for a pure interpretation.

I think if they did a movie on Syd the only way it would work would be if it was a psychedelic fantasia -like exploration of the crazed insights of the lyrics. The narrative elements that make up most movies or the "facts" (people, events, gigs, timelines etc.. ) should be pushed into the background. Like secondary elements that seem to be happening almost casually while the fantasy/lyrical insights become more involved and complex as Syd withdraws and removes himself from the scene.
I'm not a fan of Across The Universe movie but I did like how the songs moved the film along. I think something less like a musical and more like a animated psychedelic episodes while the songs played would be affective. I would probably hate a film that tried to strictly recreate events. I think the songs are an intense insight into his mind and his views and I think there is more than enough in them to draw an accurate account of who he was during that period at least.

I wonder how a Syd biopic would go down if done in the style of "I'm Not There"?

Johnny Depp would be a big name to attach to a Syd Barrett film but for me Noel Fielding would be the perfect choice, people out side of UK might not be aware of him, but do a search on the internet for him, he really looks like Syd, and he is a surrealist, who paints and draws, and acts.
