It was quite expensive, I'd say $25-$27 for adults (kids were cheaper). It certainly makes you want to stay all day to get your moneys worth. It a place you need to see at least one time. Of course they've added alot since '89. We went down to Six Flags in early August and the kids had much more fun there.Pugs on the Wing wrote:Uh...yeah. We went there the first year we moved here--1989--they sure know how to grab the touristas with all their roadside ads. I guess they've added even more now, according to the official website (which is not that good a site, so I'm not including the URL). I don't know how to describe it, for those who've never seen it, but it's like...Frank Lloyd Wright dropped acid with Lewis Carroll in an antique toy shop.quicksilver wrote:Pugs, have you ever been to 'House on the rock'
We drove the kids out last Spring during Easter break and spent most of the day there. It you haven't seen it before it's basically a huge museum filled with all sorts of weird stuff. They say from beginning to end you walk over 2 miles.
This site gives a pretty good review: http://www.roadsideamerica.com/attract/WISPRhouse.html
We went in the fall, thank goodness, as I see it's not air conditioned. Don't ever go in the summer! And it was rather pricey, too, from what I remember. I think it was like $12 or $17 per person (forgot), which by 1989 standards was quite high, even more than what we paid at the world famous San Diego Zoo two years prior. How much was it when you went, quicksilver?
It's a must-see to get what I consider a cheesey Wisconsin flavour, but it'll leave you yearning for something more down to earth, IMHO. The next trip we took after that was to see the Cave of the Mounds which is near HOTR, which I enjoyed much more.
And this is weird, but I've still never been to the Wisconsin Dells. I went when I was 14 w/my parents, but that doesn't really count. I'm sure it's all touristed-out now w/fake-o water parks and casinos (from what I gather in the ads around here), and none of the natural beauty from what I can remember that long ago is left.
The Dells is a completely different story all together. If you haven't been there since you were 14, your in for a big surprise. It's like a mini Vegas just loaded with hotels and restaurants. Actually, we'll be up at the "Wilderness Hotel" in fall with all my in-laws. They kind of treat the family for a few days. They have a incredible indoor water park that is just a blast. If you do go up sometime, you must eat at the "Moosejaw". It's a BBQ/ micro-brewery. Great food/beer.
