Duckboy, look at the end of the penultimate paragraph you quoted me.
WYWH was a crossover point: although the album concept was dreamt up by Waters, his cynicism is measured and tempered by the material the band as a whole had been developing since late 73, in particular Shine on part 1.
Welcome To The Machine and Have a Cigar were pointers of what was to come from Waters when given more rope by the other members (well, he took the rope and no-one really stopped him!), but the album as a whole is a definite mix, which is why I was a little ambiguous over it.
Cheers,
Mike

Re: Floyd Survey - Pt3 - Favourite Era, member and best musician
The Genius was the best songwriter.
The Genius had all the good ideas.
The Genius ran the band during the big 5 (dostm thru TFC) which are the only albums that really matter.
The Genius is the best musician cause he can tell what sounds good.
The Genius is the best looking dude in PF.
The Genius was the smartest dude in PF.
The Genius is Pink.
Gilmour was the best session musician....followed by the ingrate Wright.
Mason was a joke but he tends to admit it sometimes.
Syd was horrible. Never wrote a single noteworthy song. The only thing he did was provide a vehicle for The Genius. Then, thankfully, he dropped out so The Genius could take over....although it is sad that he got sick.

It would have been interesting to split between 1968 till 1977 and 1978-1983. I wouldn't call the first period Waters-Floyd !!

there shoudl have been a best songwriter catagory... Waters would have won, but Gilmour, Wright and Barret would have gotten some votes to. It would have been interesting to see the results.

A good idea. Perhaps a category for the Big Pink Floyd Survey 2010!

I'm old enough to remember the polls that the UK music paper Melody Maker ran annually in the 70s. It's laughable now but Gilmour was the only member of the Floyd who DIDN'T feature in their respective instrument top 10. I wonder if the others teased him over it?

Dude, the joke is that Mason was the only member to be present in every incarnation of the Floyd. Ergo, I like it all (well most). Nothing to do with his compositions or contributions. . . I'm still on the fence about Scream Thy Last Scream.
