well said, sonofthedesert.

I like Syd´s music, he was awesome rhythm guitarist and he surely played with the words as he was inspired by old English poetry.
Rick was very important to "process" Syd´s ideas (and tuned Roger´s bass too), as he was the only "real" musician in the group at that time...

(pitchforks, hah hah, I do know what you mean, Alan)

Ya know, calling him "Igor", how he sucks musically & is very depressing. No one was saying this when Floyd was still together....& as far as his ego: he let the media in on it 25 years ago but I've heard many a more pretensious rockers like Sting, Mick & Keith.Don't really get it.
Always seemed to me that Waters fans are less inclined to like Waters as a person, possibly due to him being a grumpy old sod in most interviews since 1983 and for being a bit of a control freak. In saying that though, dislike for the guy does not equal dislike for the music, as if you don't like the waters era then that's to discredit the key years of the band, and the majority of their output. Waters openly called himself the best songwriter since the war with the possible exception of John Lennon (in the Q magazine interview of 1992) and statements like that i would say validate people taking the piss out of him. But in a way it is a friendly ribbing as we all respect him as a musician. Much like when Gilmour takes abuse about being fat- we can slag him off but he is still a very talented musician, even if a little stuck up. Like the music, but not particularly the people who make it

No conversation can ever be just about Barrett, someone always has to mention Waters. You're talking about two totally different styles of writing.

I love Barretts music because for me it's soothing. Its very relaxing. Of course not everyone can get it, much in the way I don't get the Grateful Dead. Its all in what you're into, man!

P.s. I'm gonna grab my astral pitchfork if I see one more "fat" remark about The Gilmour!!!

*bites his tongue in regard to Fat Ol' Guts* :P

Roger's ego...Gilmour's weight...Syd's cult...NONE of these things have anything to do with the music.

Roger still writes brilliantly, Gilmour still makes great music to nap to and Syd made music which was totally out of place in it's day, but continues to inspire new songwriters and bands.

Love any of it or hate all of it, one cannot deny that it's not going away anytime soon. One can only choose to embrace it or to ignore it.

If one chooses to bitch about it, then one is only continuing to bring it to the attention of others who might not otherwise have heard about it, thus dooming themselves to continue to be surrounded by it in some form or another.

Thank you for refraining from a "fat guts" comment, moses!

I think Waters makes brilliant music also. It was just totally different than Barretts. "Take up thy stethescope" proved that. I often think that had Barrett not stressed out so bad and had remained with the Floyd, how often he and Waters would have had conflict. Waters is a strong-willed, political man but yes I love his music. The Gilmours music isn't "to nap to" IMO. His is just as brilliant. Its also quite stimulating in moments of intimacy. Try it sometime, moses.

I've always maintained and will continue to maintain that if Syd had not lost it and had stayed in the band (hopefully with Gilmour still coming on board) he and Waters could very well have become another Lennon/McCartney or Jagger/Richards who despite all THEIR OWN conflicts with their respective writing partners still managed to create great music....in fact, very often differences are just what drives the brilliance of those creations. i.e. Duality...two sides of the coin so to speak....creating a whole.

I guess there's a little bit of Pink Floyd for everyone. 3 distinct guys who were very creative & seeing as how they were all at least acquainted with each other in their youth it's amazing that 1 band would have 3 different leaders that all came from the same town & knew each other. How many bands can claim that?? Syd, Roger, David....there's something for everyone & It really is all about the tunes, whoever you prefer.

I´d replace Waters to Wright, but I get your point, no prob.
To me them both (Wright and Barrett) was the true driving force in thouse early days. With Robert Wyatt (drums) and Kevin Ayers (bass) they could have come another fab orchestra with almost endless improvisations and witty sing along songs... well, what we got was "Another Brick In The Wall". Such a psychedelic prog song. No wonder why some people really don´t get the appeal.

1. You're welcome...although by pointing out that I was refraining from making a "fat guts" comment, I might as well have made one.

I was trying to see what you can do with that pitchfork. :P

2. I've found that Roger's music tends to have more tempo variance to switch up the pace of those intimate moments.

"On An Island" is too monotempo for me to be intimately effective with maximum impact.

100 bpm is good for only so long. Then, one must speed up and/or slow down in order to keep one's partner from drifting off into slumberland, I've found.

Would you like me to demonstrate for you sometime the joys of Radio KAOS in intimate moments? :D :P

And it's "mossy" for short, please. :P :P :P :P

I once used "Have A Cigar" as the background music for a home-made porno...that doesn't count, though; does it?

I lost mine to the popping and cracking of a real fire on a cold winter's night...and the voice of her older brother walking in on us, pausing (for an uncomfortable length of time) and asking if we'd like a cup of coffee.

Oh, I still don't get the appeal, btw.
