sometimes you need an "inception button" to make your life more dramatic.

Re: Inception
The deceased Phillip K. Dick should have been given co-scriptwriting credit for this film, it only steals from about 7 or 8 of his books. That said, it was a mind-bender of a film that bears several repeat viewings. Those of you who watched it once and said "WTF?" didn't get it, this is a film that has several levels of self-reference.

Re: Inception
The effects were spectacular, but the plot gave me a headache. See above.
Dark City is a wonderful film, and though you will undoubtedly think it irrelevent to the topic, I would recommend you see it if haven't. It is a surrealistic mystery, and the visuals in it are excellent. I think they are echoed in "Inception", which is why I was reminded of it. Keifer Sutherland is in it, but my memory fails me as to the cast and director, my apologies.

Er, so was that intended to be:

i.e., is it DiCaprio or Mosepa who is to be regarded as "a talentless hack"?mosespa wrote:The new Christopher Nolan movie means that I now have to reassess my opinion of Leonardo DiCaprio as a talentless hack, who only gets work because teenage girls swoon over him.

Re: Inception
Maybe I've watched too many films stoned or something, but Inception was not all that difficult to follow, or especially clever. The idea behind it is quite slick and clever, but the recurring visual themes for each 'level' sort of kept it all running smoothly. The lowest level was an ice scene, and that bus driving off the bridge had an impact on each level yadda yadda....

Re: Inception
well i finally saw this the other week and then i saw the eternal sunshine of the spotless mind which was made earlier and had similar concepts. it blew inception into the weeds.
the issues i had with inception were that it was supposed to be about dreams but it was more like a virtual reality than a dream.
for me i had no emotional involvement with the characters - i didn't care whether they lived or died. i found the performances lackluster and drab - and i did expect a little more from Ellen Page who was horribly under-utilized. it was also way too long for me and i found it dragged heavily in places. i also thought that the CGI work was pretty unimaginative.
i am not really sure why this film has been regarded so highly - the concept is interesting but the workman like approach and the no surprise surprise ending left me cold.
maybe it should have been called deception.

The film was no mind-bender to me, more like mind-numbing.

I really can't understand why some people believe that it's a "smart" or "complex" film. It's pretty simple and silly, full of obvious contradictions and plot holes ...mmmm perhaps that's why some think it's complex? Becase it doesn't make sense? Well, actually it's just a very flawed plot and script.
The worst thing, and most offensive to me, is that ultimately is just a movie about nothing at all. The movie is more concerned with the exposition of the mechanics of the so called "dreams" than with exploring any relevant topic or theme. It's more or less the same that happened with The Matrix after the first half of the movie, they just forgot about all the cool philosophical stuff and just went nuts with the guns, kung fu, shades and leather jackets to the end.
The sad thing is that the film really had the potential to be great, it had an interesting premise and some amazing visuals, but in the end it didn't deliver. Like Oz said, a big Deception indeed.
I actually found the whole idea pretty dumb really, and that was my main problem with the movie, my brain was constantly saying to me "this is soooo stupid!" While watching it I always found myself asking questions about the lack of logic behind a lot of things. Like why do they need dream machines inside the dreams to jump to the next level? Are they aware that physical and organic-biological laws do not necessarily apply when inside a dream? They could aswell use doors or bridges or curtains to jump from dream to dream. Also how come that they are able to anesthetize a dreamer inside a dream when the dreamer is blindfolded and hence not aware that he's being anesthetized? Can you dream with something if you are not aware of dreaming with it? I don't think so. And why are the dream security guys armed with regular guns when they could be armed with lasers, or magic swords or hell even just have a huge dragon for security? Actually the whole dream sequences felt more like a lame FPS videogame than anything resembling the weird reality of dream logic. It's quite ironic that an old movie about video games like ExistenZ captured more of the spirit and nature of dreaming that this modern "masterpiece" about dreams.my breakfast. wrote:Maybe I've watched too many films stoned or something, but Inception was not all that difficult to follow, or especially clever. Re: Inception
hi kelly, did you know that i had a fleeting glympse of your photo in my closet when i was about 3. but it had a dark face. i turned to look and it was gone, peeking around the closet door in the middle of the night, it wasnt scarey but i had my dad look in there the next day, it was actually like great great grandpa spirit escorting me to this realm, yes im totally serious, a white sheet type of grim reaper without the sicle...

Re: Inception
It's a visually great movie with very immersive atmosphere and story, although just a little bit silly in the plot department, so on blurry-ray it should look gorgeous at least.kelly clarks9n wrote:i bought Dark City on bluray today on the strength of Jaboa's sentiments - it better be as good as Robocop or there will be trubble.
And is worth noting that The Matrix took a lot of visual and plot cues from it too.

Re: Inception
i am sure Kelly will be pleased with their purchase Daniel.
i suspect Kelly is a Prisoner fan (the one that starred Patrick Mcgoohan) where everone wanted to know "who is number one"
a great series if you havent seen it, Admiral.
