Plant doesn't write most of the lyrics. If you're going to knock the band, at least have an idea of what you're talking about.

You know what those little comments from Fred Durst are about, right?

If you don't, I shall explain now.

Fred has known Aaron Lewis for some time. Fred and Aaron used to spend evenings sitting around with an acoustic guitar and making up songs. "Outside" was a chorus that Aaron had, but kept making up different verses every time they sang it together.

One night in Biloxi during the Family Values Tour (from whence the live version comes,) there was some time that needed to be filled. Fred Durst grabbed Aaron Lewis and suggested they go sing "Outside" for the crowd, just to keep something going on onstage.

Aaron protested, pointing out that the song has never had any set verses, just a chorus. Fred encouraged him to wing it on the verses and Fred would join him on the chorus. If you listen, Fred never sings in the verses...only the chorus.

Thus...in the middle of the song...Durst was moved to let Biloxi know that this was, indeed, the "real MF-ing deal, y'all." Aaron was improvising these haunting, moving lyrics.

Of course, this was all recorded and released on the Family Values Tour live album and released as a single...so, when it came time to record a studio version (the old popular demand thing,) the lyrics Aaron improvised that night were the ones everyone knew...so he had to use them.

But seriously, I had heard some of the story, but did not realize that the comments on the live version was part of the story. Which do you prefer mosespa?
