I've just downloaded Kalacakra - Crawling To Lhasa (1974)
The lyrics are in German so I haven?t a clue what the hell there singing about, the music?s good so that will do me. A bit like Gong I suppose. Can have been blasting out my speakers as well as Amon D??l. If I carry on at this rate I?ll be goose-stepping to work. No offence intended.

I love that Kalacakra album. Some of it reminds me a bit of Ozric Tentacles, but some of it is a little on the folky side too. A cool combination. Great album!

Would love to see them too, though honestly, I was not as crazy about their more recent albums (the one's since their "reappearance") than I was about their classic stuff. It was good to hear they still maintained the experimental nature of their music (rather than going for some lame attempt at commercialism), but I found albums like Ravvivando a little difficult to listen to. 2002's Patchwork was good, but it was mostly comprised of stuff taken out of the vaults and stitched together like The Faust Tapes.

Oh man, I used to have so much Krautrock on vinyl. I started buying them used around Toronto in the late 70's. There was lots to choose from. Nobody wanted this stuff then. It was considered to be an out-of-date joke! They were usually 3 or 4 dollars each. I remember taking a huge pile of them to the counter in a used record store and the guy says to me 'why are you buying all this stuff?" I'm not talking just about the usual Can and Neu! records. Most of it was the really obscure stuff that now sells for hundreds of dollars. I sold a lot of it off about ten years ago. I still have some Can and Neu! and Faust (my favorite!) and the odd obscurity. The bulk of them I sold were, in my opinion, just really bad versions of Anglo rock. I still have the mighty Twenty Sixty Six and Then on vinyl, though! The best Kraut heavy prog rock album ever! Arrrgh!
(Don't bother with the cd reissue of this. The master tapes have disappeared).
That's how I got a lot of Krautrock stuff early on, was browsing through used record shops...that was the early-mid 80's though, and it was hard to come by. Still, I managed to get vinyl copies of all the early Amon D??l II albums, early Tangerine Dream, and some Can, but never found any Neu! So consequently, I didn't get to hear them till may years later. I'm glad a lot of this stuff, even really obscure but excellent Krautrock, like the Kalacakra and the Kraan stuff, has been re-issued on CD.
Thought I'd bring this thread back because I've discovered quite a few obscure Krautrock bands recently...
Has anybody else heard of Virus, Vinegar or Mythos?? They are all amazing, especially Virus and Vinegar. Fantastic psychedelic music! I think that Virus had a weird vocalist who sounds quite like Renate Knaup-Kr?tenschwanz, but much less quirky (still freaked out stuff! ). Their second album ('Thoughts') is one of the best pieces of music I've heard since the Cosmic Jokers' second album - the organ playing is pretty wild! There is also some fantastic fuzzed up guitar parts. If you like Amon Duul II then you will probably love it! It's like Amon Duul II jamming with Atomic Rooster, Black Sabbath and a mental singer! Vinegar are very psychedelic. Some really weird sounds in some of their stuff...one of their tracks is a bit reminiscent of Celestial Voices, but slightly more guitar based. Mythos are more of a symphonic sounding band, with the guitar player switching to flute quite a lot (a bit like Andrew Latimer from Camel). It's like Symphonic-Folk-Rock, check it out if you like decent music!
There is also a very cool video of Amon Duul II playing Eye Shaking King on youtube (thanks 2066!). For some reason Renate doesn't seem to be in the lineup, but she never really did much in that track, anyway!

I've heard about all the bands you mentioned and i know that Mythos's second album called "Dreamlab" was released on the "Kosmische Musik" - Label just like the Ash Ra - Stuff but that's all i know....never listened to anything recorded by these Bands. Krautrock is more and more becoming my favourite Music - Genre..... there are so many great records to find if you just take the time to check out!
A big thank you for this thread. It made me look up in the archives, i found Tangerine Dream - the Video RemiXes. Just had a nice afternoon with "them" and a couple of friends. As for the other bands mentioned: wow, will have to spend some bandwith on them, am getting curious already... Thanks for the listening tips too
Inspired by the recent re-release of Faust IV, I found The Wumme Years 5CD set on EBay last week and am looking forward to getting into the first three albums.Also, just going thru a bit of a Tangs phase and have spent this afternoon,or some indefinable period of time anyroad, listening to Zeit-highly recommended,as is pretty much anything by them pre about '84.
I've only ever heard Rubycon by Tangerine Dream, but that is very cool. I'll have to check out some more of their stuff sometime. Electronic Meditation looks very interesting...anything that involves Klaus Schulze is worth listening to!
Has anybody here heard the 80s lineup of Amon Duul II (with Dave Anderson and John Weinzierl)? It looks like they decided to stop doing the 'structured' stuff that they did after the first few albums and went back to the early long improvisational style. It should be very interesting to hear (I bought Hawk Meets Penguin by this lineup of the band and it should arrive within the next few days....I can't wait to hear more of their long free-form improvs!)
Wow, I downloaded a Can bootleg today, and it is amazing. I must say that I haven't really been too impressed by their studio work (or at least what I've heard of it, which is Tago Mago). They sound far better live, much more interesting than the studio recordings.
