I just heard The Madcap Laughs for the first time today. I have been into floyd for around 10 years and never got around to getting it until recently. I just really never connected very well with the early Syd-era Floyd.....but man, I gotta tell you....the Madcap Laughs is f'ing awesome. So here is my question:
Do you like the Syd-era floyd better than the solo Syd stuff?
I've gotta go with solo syd...it is really cool. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the early Floyd with Syd...I just feel like his solo stuff is more original and interesting to listen to.
I do like solo syd a lot, there're are quite a few nice moments. But there're some bits which are just mad rambles which I find difficult at times. It can sometimes conjure a sad sight of a young man with severe mental problems (funny that). The work he did with the Floyd is more focused and controlled and less, well ... mad. I prefer that stuff.
I too love all Syd... but he was more in control for Piper and the singles, and the Floyd were a great backing band for his vision. So With Floyd gets the nod from me.
Barrett is a really good album. I voted solo and agree this material lacks some focus, BUT the lyrics are quite something - what a range of thought and emotion - The rest stood in this shadow for some time
I love all Syd's songs and it's great to hear the other Floyds on them, though particularly David is responsible for the horrible editing and studio chatter on Madcap.

i voted for the pink floyd w/ syd... mainly b/c it was more psychedelic... though i do really love the stripped-down, acoustic feel of his solo albums...
