Another Brick in the Wall part 2 - double negatives

Post by jtull »

Could anybody give me an explanation about the grammatical features of the following sentences?

"We don't need no education,
We don't need no thought control"

Are they grammatically correct?

Thank you in advance.

Clearly not what you would call 'good' grammar, but, taking the words themselves, they could mean different things. In a kind of slang way they could mean we don't need any education. On the other hand it could be we don't need 'No Education'. ie we DO need education. I suspect that's Roger playing around with words.

Thanks for detailed explanation Bigmanpigman.

Those sentences reminds me of "I can't get no satisfaction", which I also find confusing.
