Is "tone and feel" really so important?
What? Really? Well, of course it is! Specially in the case of Pink Floyd! Tone is EVERYTHING in the case of Floyd. Tone is what makes the "Pink Floyd sound", well, a sound. Of course, tone is completely irrelevant to determine the quality of a melody, or the adequacy of a harmony, or the liveliness of a rhythm, but tone (timbre actually) is what gives music a particular taste, is what makes some recording of a song feel tastier than others. The tone of his voice is what makes Gilmour a better singer than Waters, and the tone of his guitar is what makes him stand out from an endless ocean of blues influenced rock guitarist. The tone of Ricks synth is what pushes a pretty regular instrumental jam into orgasmic territory in Any Colour You Like, and is what makes you get goosebumps when you hear that ping at the beginning of Echoes. Pink Floyd were masters of tone, that's what makes them special and unlike any other band from their period.
As any fan of electronic or drone music could attest, yes, tone is VERY important.

Actually, the second chord is my favourite part from that clip!
Admittedly, I'm not as enthusiastic as Flathead about it, but so far I like the
sound of what I hear. All three clips have good things to like, but I particularly enjoy the first promo clip the most, the one with those synths droning over the piano chords and acoustic guitar while the hands reach for each other. It reminds me of Fripp and Bowie's Heroes.
