Caught some of this on youtube...amazing what was done to improve the quality of some of those tracks. Loved it.

The first CD offers the really old stuff in very nice quality. I really like the 2010 mixes. Disc 2 has the Stockholm concert which is very nice to have despite the missing lyrics. Even though I am just not into the Syd-Floyd, I guess I will never learn to like that era. John Latham is just pure and utter crap, thank god that was never released before

I like the 'John Latham' experiment, except for Mason using that studio time to exercise some drum ruffle lessons...Yucateco wrote:John Latham is just pure and utter crap, thank god that was never released before
For me, it's an example of how Mason's lack of drum skills is holding Pink Floyd back.
The keyboards and guitars have lots of interesting sounds, if you can listen through that noise of a kid having a first try at drumming.
On 'The Piper', I think Mason is doing a great job.
Well, if that's really all done by him (and not by Norman Smith helping him out, as with the ruffle in 'Interstellar Overdrive').
Barrett had Robert Wyatt and Jerry Shirley on his solo albums.
I wonder if Mason didn't want to drum, or if Barrett didn't bother to ask.

But did Barrett even bother to ask Robert Wyatt or Jerry Shirley to drum? Or was that Waters and Gilmour idea?

At least, Robert Wyatt (of The Soft Machine) did his drums when Malcolm Jones was still the producer.danielcaux wrote:But did Barrett even bother to ask Robert Wyatt or Jerry Shirley to drum? Or was that Waters and Gilmour idea?
Mason is the only Pink Floyd member not involved in Barrett's solo albums.
Maybe he didn't want to be involved, or maybe he wasn't asked.

That's an interesting observation, along with the one that Nick Mason is the only person to feature on every 'Pink Floyd' albumWolfpack wrote:...

Re: Pink Floyd The Early Years 1965-1967 Cambridge St/ation
Based on all that I have read watched or read I get the impression that Nick was probably the most pissed off at Barrett at that time and so likely wanted no part of him after the split and perhaps vice-versa Syd had no fondness for him, if he ever had. Don't know. Mind you, Nick has softened his views over time and is now more generous in his opinions and outlook but back then he was not happy with Syd.
For what it's worth.

I've been listening to what's available of the set on Spotify (so, the two CDs), and I have to say I'm gaining a new appreciation for some of it. I didn't particularly like "Vegetable Man" to begin with, but now? I kinda dig it.
The rest of it is fascinating. The Stockholm concert is pretty neat (absolutely love the performance of "Reaction in G" - I think Roger lifted that bass line from "Take Up Thy Stethoscope and Walk" though) and all of Disc 1 is pretty awesome stuff. It kills me that they never finished "In the Beechwoods", though that instrumental alone still sounds like it could be a standalone track.

I'm currently looking to buy the Early Set volumes but all the audio is already on my Spotify. My question is, is it worth paying $250 for the songs (that I already have access to) and the video content? Is the video content that good? Isn't most of it on Youtube? Please help.

I think it's entirely down to personal preference as to whether it's worth it. Some of the video stuff is definitely illuminating, but not necessarily essential.
