Who had the most influence on the development of Psychedelic Rock?

Post by Keith Jordan »

Roger Waters thinks he is number one Floyd but I think Syd Batrett was the most influential.

Syd Barrett's influence on psychedelic rock was significant and enduring. As the co-founder and original frontman of Pink Floyd, he helped establish the band's psychedelic sound and aesthetic, which went on to influence countless other artists in the genre. Here are some of the ways in which he influenced psychedelic rock:

Experimental sound: Barrett was known for his use of experimental guitar techniques, such as feedback, distortion, and dissonance, which helped create Pink Floyd's unique sound. His playing style, along with the use of electronic effects and sound collages, helped define the psychedelic rock genre and inspired other musicians to explore new and unconventional sounds.

Songwriting: Barrett's songwriting was a major influence on psychedelic rock. He wrote songs that were surreal, whimsical, and often full of wordplay and literary references. His lyrics were often abstract and nonsensical, but they conveyed a sense of playful experimentation and a fascination with the psychedelic experience.

Visuals: Barrett was also known for his visual art, which often accompanied Pink Floyd's live performances. His use of light shows, projections, and other visual effects helped create an immersive and psychedelic experience for the audience.

Fashion: Barrett's fashion sense was also a major influence on the psychedelic rock scene. He was known for his bold and colorful clothing, often featuring patterns and designs that were inspired by his own artwork.

Attitude: Finally, Barrett's attitude towards music and life in general was a major influence on the psychedelic rock movement. He embodied the spirit of experimentation and rebellion that defined the era, and his willingness to push the boundaries of what was considered acceptable in music and art helped pave the way for other artists to do the same.
