I strongly suggest their greatest hits CD.dswain81 wrote:Not me...it is just a little too happy for me. Good guitarists though. Maybe one day I will learn to appreciate them. Any good albums to start with? I downloaded most of American Beauty, but lost all the files.
You can tune a guitar but you can't tuna fish.

I love the Dead. I would start of with Skeletons in the Closet, Its thier best of up til 1973, and has some really great songs. Later albums which I really enjoy are "Blues for Allah" and "Mars Hotel" both are great mid 70s albums by the dead. Although thier best work, in my opinion is between 68 and 72. American Beauty and Workingmans Dead are both great albums, they are more country orinated. If you like trippy music. Aoxomoxoa is perfect and Live/Dead from 1969 is amazing. It has a full version of Darkstar which is never on an album. Great band. Plus Garcia was an amazing guitarist, he was missing his middle finger on his right hand.

great Dead site
http://www.gdlive.com
Has a tremendous amount of Dead shows. THis is a nice way to hear the band at what they did best - play live shows. It is broken up by year, and each year has oodles of shows. Most are in shn format, but if you're impatient, there is a smaller MP3 section as well.
There is also a miscellaneous section with different bands. There is even a live McCartney show to be had.
A live dvd has just been released of the last show at Winterland (the Grateful Dead headlined). Extremely good mix, dolby 5.1 as well as dts.
I'm off to see a Dave Mason show tonite in Marin County - should be great.

I would say that the Grateful Dead are my favorite band.... ever. Skeletons and Europe 72 were my first two discs, and although I havent listened to Skeletons in years, Europe 72 is still in constant rotation.
