I'd have to say Roger, but he had to really work at it. IMO his best was Animals.

It's too bad we really never got to hear Syd develop as a songwriter. What an adventure it would have been.

Hard to compare...

Judging by the beginning of their careers I'd say Syd, you don't have to listen to the rest of the album to know that 'Take up thy stethoscope...' isn't the best song on PATGOD.

Judging by the 'endresult' of their careers I'd say Roger... but he had time to develop the skill. What Syd's music would have been like, when he had developed himself remains unanswered.

Roger. Some of Syds songs are just too strange for my liking. Lyrically, they're very good. But in some cases, I don't like the melodies.

It is not really comparing like to like as roger had 30 years to develop as a songwriter and syd perhaps 3-4 in total. Comparing them fairly for the first 3-4 years then Syd was the best.

That is a technical point so I voted for Roger....

dont l@@k at me!

I think Roger, Barrett's songs are just too simple to be really great songs, I enjoy listening to them, but there isn't much depth in them and they are not as beautifull as the ones Roger did.

i think asking the question: "who is a better songwriter" is a stupid question..........
cos' c'moon think about it............ syd only released 1 album with Floyd and waters released everything else up until final cut........

so anyone who said Syd is a better songwriter is actually saying that PIPER AT THE GATES OF DAWN is better then every other floyd album. yer claiming that all of syd's songs off PIPER are better then everything else water did......which i find very ver ver very foookin hard to beleive.....

syd was not a genius. the songs he wrote did not reflect any genius IMO.....

i don't recall syd writing songs like Echoes, Careful With That Axe, Eugene, etc or albums like THE WALL.........

Syd Barrett released more albums without the Floyd, don't they count?

Words of one "Madcap" are far more better than all waters's 30 years of writing.

Waters will never write:
Reason it is written on the brambles
stranded on the spikes - my blood red, oh listen:
remember those times I could call
through the clear day
time - be there...
braver and braver, a handkerchief waver
the louder you lips to a loud hailer
growing together, they ('re) growing each either
no wondering, stumbling, fumbling
rumbling minds shot together,
our minds shot together...

Waters is too much war-oriented. I respect him very much but he IS NOT an artist. He is just a musician (and VERY VERY good one - i love amused 2 death) when Barrett was an artist to the backbone. He was too creative. He was a fast sprinter who had run millions of years ahead all of us in that 60-s.

There is only one thing which i dont like in Roger Waters - he cudnt understand Syd and pressed (pushed if u like) him to much. He surely shudnt have done it. I will not be even afraid to say he was really a fool doing all that. Fathers' death isnt an excuse.....

What do u think of it?
