New Meanings to the song "If"

Post by dswain81 »

Given the relationship between Roger and Pink Floyd and his ex-wives, the lyrics in this song almost seem prophetic (besides the swan, train stuff).

What do you guys think?

IF

If I were a swan, I'd be gone.
If I were a train, I'd be late.
And if I were a good man,
I'd talk with you
More often than I do.

If I were to sleep, I could dream.
If I were afraid, I could hide.
If I go insane, please don't put
Your wires in my brain.

If I were the moon, I'd be cool.
If I were a rule, I would bend for you.
If I were a good man, I'd understand
The spaces between friends.

If I were alone, I would cry.
And if I were with you, I'd be home and dry.
And if I go insane,
And they lock me away,
Will you still let me join in the game?

If I were a swan, I'd be gone.
If I were a train, I'd be late again.
If I were a good man,
I'd talk with you
More often than I do.

I guess that I am insane. Oh, well. I just thought the reference to the moon and the spaces between friends was kind of interesting. I guess not.   :(

In a way, I think it might have a little to do with Syd. He was always late, he was always mentally gone, and he went insane, and they didn't let him stay in the game, and if he was a good man, he would have talked to them about his problems.

Im with Sydjones on this. I always thought it was the first song that was written solely about Syd.

The Syd connections cannot be denied. I was looking at the lyrics with a more fresh view. I guess, in some ways, Roger has taken on some Syd-like characteristics (not mental issues, but relationship issues, given his personality).

I guess I am not explaining myself very well, so, I'll just let this one go. If nobody else is getting what I'm getting, then that is cool. Lyrics are supposed to be open to several interpretations (most of the time).

Goodbye Thread.

I am not talking about what it was written about. I am talking about looking at the lyrics years down the road and how they could have a different meaning than they originally had.

I must be stupid.

i think rogers says "i am sorry" to syd:

"i d talk with u"
"if i were a good man"
"I d understand the spaces between friends"

and most of all this one:
If I were alone, I would cry.
And if I were with you, I'd be home and dry.
And if I go insane,
And they lock me away,
Will you still let me join in the game?

P.S. at least i want to hope that ROg understood he was wrong about Syd. I think it was another revenge for his father. He s crazy about that. BVut for me friedns are more important than parents. (and dead parents surely are not a think to talk about). I feel shy for Roger writing songs about his father. He is asid to be a strong charectered man but waht he feels about father is not a thing for a Man. IMO. (or am I stupid?) :)
