the great unrecorded concept album
and basis for a two act live show of (mostly) all new music
a decade later it was considered a radical move to do those Wall shows, where they didnt play a single one of their old songs
yet theyd done exactly the same thing back in 1969
and thats not the only thing this songsuite has in common with The Wall!
why did it not become their new album?
most sources say theyd already released most of the songs, but Im not so sure
Cymbaline was not part of the 1st show, so presumably they started performing tM&tJ before working on the More soundtrack
Eugene was only a bside
and the versions of Pow R Toc H and Celestial Voices were quite different than the earlier versions
(esp the one time they added brass and choir to Celestial Voices)

According to Wikipedia:
"Plans for an official live album release of The Man and the Journey were considered, but abandoned due to overlap of material with Ummagumma."
So...the reason that it was never recorded and officially released is because, apparently, the band decided to do Ummagumma (and thus, use the material that appears in both places there,) instead.

Meh... I read that a while ago and it's more of a Hear It Proper type thing. It just wouldn't work, at least for me, to use the album tracks in place of the live, and often superior (The End of the Beginning being a lot better than the album version of Celestial Voices in my opinion).snifferdog wrote:What's the best ROIO of this to get?
I made my own as per the instructions on this site
But, each to their own, I guess

Complete Concertgebouw is the only version I have. I recommend it for those who haven't gotten it yet.

That would be the site to get it on

Apart from anything else, I think Complete Concertgebouw is the only ROIO which includes the famous Teatime section.
The Massed Gadgets Of Auximines is better is a few ways, some pieces (such as Beset By Creatures Of The Deep, and Labyrinths Of Auximines, and especially Work) are longer than on the later Concertgebouw recording. Also some of the songs were not included at that early stage, which gives the whole thing a more experimental feel, less similar to the "standard" setlist
