I just ordered a new web server (the computer the NPF website is served from) with twice the amount of RAM. Wonder what that means? It is like being more clever and being able to more things at once! The current server has half a gig of RAM and the new one has one gig. So that will make things run more quickly and stop the website going down!! In the past month, we have had nearly 10 hours of downtime (thanks to pingdom.com tracking) so that should be eliminated now, hopefully!!!
So, what does this mean?
Once I have tested and set up the new server and make sure everything is working fine, I shall do X, Y and Z so that we are using the new server, and I shall cancel the current one we are on. This may result in up to 72 hours where you cannot access the website.
For the comedians amongst us, I know 72 hours is more than the 10 hours downtime we have had in December 2008, but we shouldn't have any in 2009.
When the server goes down and is slow, it is because we are out of RAM!
So there you go. I shall keep those of you who are interested posted about the matter on this thread.
Until then, I shall continue to drink lots of beer!

Re: New NPF Server!
Indeed! Very annoying indeed. That is due to RAM outage! Now - well, when they finally set it up - we have a nice bew server with twice as much RAM. A whole GB now!

Top man Keith!
I'm sure it'll be ace after we're installed on the new beast.

Re: New NPF Server!
The new server is all set up now so I am just configuring it and transferring all the site files over. Once I have everything set up on the new server, I will be "pointing" the neptunepinkfloyd.co.uk to the new server. Whilst those settings take a while to spread around the internet, the site may appear to be down for between 12-72 hours depending on how good your ISP is!
That mat not be until tomorrow though.

Re: New NPF Server - Jan 2009
The new server is all set up and ready to go (I think, touch wood) so I shall shut the current server down tomorrow, and get the new one up and working. As such, there may be some downtime as previously mentioned.

Right, the new server is up and working. I hope it is working faster for everyone now! If not, time to cry!

It was indeed!
If anyone spots any errors anywhere on the site, do let me know. I have tested it all (I think) but may have missed something!

It's still taking ages to accept a post, Keith. Any reason?

I restarted the database server about 5-10 minutes ago. Did your posts above post fast?
