The Sound Of An Organ
From the earliest days of Pink Floyd, going back to the time of Syd, if you listen to the music you will note that one of the big sounds playing is the organ. That would be Rick Wright.
But, back in the day one of the insturments that so many wanted in their music was the sound of a Hammond B-3 organ. Now that doesn't mean that Rick was playing one of those. But, it does mean that many bands wanted that sound. Pink Floyd had that sound coming from whatever organ being played by Rick.
I would say that Rick was the sound of Pink Floyd, but, he was one of the parts of that sound.
Later albums used the organ less, but, there was still synthesizers going in the background. Again, that was Rick.
Another point to consider is that there are some very good pieces of Pink Floyd music that was penned by Rick.
But, the fact remains Rick was part of the band, not necessarily the sound, but, part of the sound.

Rick does not get the credit he deserves. If you read interviews that he has done you can tell that he has a passion for that "Floyd sound". He realizes that he was an intregal part of it. I don't know that he was ever the most talented piano/keyboard player but he knew how to use his talents in the right fashion and achieve the right sound. One thing about Floyd, they complimented each other very well.

Yeah, Rick was very instrumental in the "Pink Floyd Sound", especially through the use of the Organ. Basically, a lot of the "Pink Floyd Sound" was Rick's Organ, Dave's Guitar/Voice, and Nick's jazzy, in-the-groove drumming. Of course, we shouldn't forget Roger....his bass playing was good, but hardly an integral part of the PF Sound. More than anything it was his voice, when he did sing.
Anyway, getting to the point, Rick was a very big part of PF's sound.
