ARTISTS WHO SOUND LIKE PINK FLOYD
The last David Gilmour gig at the Royal Albert Hall in September '17 was just as amazing as the one the previous year. He's still got it after all these years. But let's face it, he could announce his retirement at any given time. Pink Floyd were unique for their long instrumental passages laden with guitar and keyboard interplay with the odd bit of sax thrown in. Many groups and artists have been influenced by them over the years. What I'm most interested in are those who make no pretense in showing off the similarities. I'm not talking about tribute bands like the excellent Britfloyd or the Aussie Pink Floyd (which I'm going to see in October). I'm talking about groups who write original music which sounds as close as possible to the Floyd.
There are quite a few examples including the more well known acts like early Porcupine Tree (The Sky Moves Sideways) and early RPWL (God Has Failed). But has anyone heard of a Norwegian group called Airbag? Start with their first album Identity and work forward from there. Amazing stuff packed with guitar & keybord melodies. There's also a Swiss group called Metamorphosis with 3 great CDs (After All These Years, Then All Was Silent, & Nobody Cares) but very difficult to find (try writing to the band leader Jean-Pierre Schenk). There's also wonderful instrumental albums by Axess Maxxess Contact & Impact) and Code Indigo.
Has anyone got any other recomendations of Pink Floyd soundalikes with lots of long instrumental passages etc. I'll look forward to hearing from you. Barry L

Interesting question.
I never thought anyone sounded like PF but check Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson out. Certain albums/tracks are very reminiscent of PF for my money.
He isn't someone who deliberately rips off anyone but you can hear his influences written all over his music which by the way is very varied.

Thread necrophilia alert!
I've just heard Airbag's first album indirectly after listening to some RPWL.
I think it's a good album. Like much music that sounds like PF, there's a little bit missing, mainly in the songwriting. I'd say it perhaps sounds a bit more like Porcupine Tree than PF. However, there are some very nice songs on the album, and I think it might be a grower if I can play it more.
I'm liking' the solo on 'Afternoon' (Biding My Time) on RPWL's version of 'The Man and the Journey'.

Inspired by seeing it's second week on the chart in around number 50 from previous week's chart... I bought "What Kinda Music" by Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes.
Yussef's drumming is incredible. The album starts of Acid Jazzy and Hip Hop but you eventually come to stripped down moments of wonder.
I see it as a stripped back Endless River but with the drumming of today. This has a guest bassist and is the only three piece music I need just now.
This is "Lift Off".

I listened to this album and think it's an excellent album. I'm going to buy it, and a RPWL CD/DVD of 'The Man and the Journey' at the same time. But, I don't think the Tom Misch/Yussef Dayes album sounds very much like Pink Floyd.Jimi Dean Barrett wrote: ↑Tue May 12, 2020 3:51 pm Inspired by seeing it's second week on the chart in around number 50 from previous week's chart... I'm going to have another listen to 'The Sky Moves Sideways' by Porcupine Tree now.
EDIT: And, the CDs have arrived already. That was fast.

It always seemed to me that Radiohead's album OK Computer sounds a lot like Pink Floyd,

Costa Rican band Los Robertas don't sound anything like Pink Floyd at all. So, why am I mentioning them. Because I think their psychedelic videos and use of kaleidoscope lenses etc. make them LOOK like Syd era PF style visual events and album cover photography.

This video is obviously inspired by the 60's psychedelic movement. Associated me to the Jefferson Airplane's -White Rabbit.

I'm not too familiar with Jefferson Airplane. The songs I hear like ^^^^ I must admit that I'm not overwhelmed by. Syd was a much better songwriter.
Hence, I tend to associate EVERYTHING psychedelic with PF.

Manic Street Preachers frontman James Dean Bradfield has an album out in August called "Even In Exile".
It's a CONCEPT ALBUM!! About the life and death of the Chilean Poet, Singer and activist Victor Jara!
Here's an instrumental which is the most Floyd sounding of the three tracks already uploaded as a taster.
NPF: Pah! Tis merely soundeth as ye Canadian Rush?!!
Me: Ah... Keep listening... Keep listening... Are you at 1.51 yet? No? Here it comes... Ah! There it is!

Interesting track Jimi. Yes, it does change at 1:51!
I was wondering which was the Alan Parsons Project song that sounds most like a PF track. Maybe it's 'Day After Day (The Sbow Must Go On)'. The arpeggios and pedal steel guitar (I presume) make it sound quite Floydian to me, and the vocal seems a bit Rick-ish.

Zambia had a psychedelic music scene in the 1970s, apparently influenced by UK acts. This song, to me, sounds influenced by Barrett era PF.

I think the band Hawa Dafi's song 'إنت مين' has taken some inspiration from THDoOR/ABitW.
The sax solo and instrumental section later on in the song sounds a bit Floydian to me too.
