Jugband Blues

Post by Keith Jordan »

This is one of my favourite barrett songs. What do you all think of it? It is a shame to think of syd trying to work out what is real and what his illness made him see and think. What exactly is a dream?

Jugband blues

It's awfully considerate of you to think of me there
and I'm most obliged to you for making it clear that I'm not there
and I never knew the moom could be so big
and I never knew the moom could be so blue
and I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes
and brought me here instead dressed in red

And I'm wandering who could be writing this song
I don't care if the sun don't shine
I don't care if nothing is mine
and I don't care I'm nervous with you
I'll do my loving in the winter
And the sea isn't green
and I love the queen
and what exactly is a dream
and what exactly is a joke

Wow. I'd never even heard of that before! What an extraordinary piece of history! I presume that it was filmed c. November '67? Wow. My breath has been taken!

Phew.

Anyway, what an incredible song. Melodically, I think it's one of Barrett's best. Lyrically too. Bleak is a word that comes to mind... Such a great way to end the album A Saucerful Of Secrets. Bit like The Final Cut, in that respect, ie, it being decidedly, well, depressing, I suppose... Although 'Jugband' wasn't composed within the context of an album...

Blah. In summation, it's one of my favourite Barrett songs!

My husband says this last part (what exactly is a dream and what exactly is a joke) reminds him of something the HAL 9000 (computer from 2001) would ask in trying to understand humanity, as dreaming and joking are uniquely human and spontaneous--something that could not be simulated by artificial intelligence.

Maybe Syd felt he was short circuiting and losing his humanity?

Not sure of the lyrical meaning. The HAL idea is interesting. I was blown away by the film--just great--never knew it existed. I have not heard the version before (I have never heard the mono version of SOS so it could be that--is it?)

It happens to be one of my favorite Barrett songs, especially the echo on the ending--surreal! 8)

I'm not sure this "and what exactly is a dream?" is an indication of his mental breakdown... it's a typical spiritual question and not necessarily the symptom of a fractured mind.

to me, most of the song is ironic, and would be sarcastic except he sings it in such a melancholy way.

The boys were interviewed shortly after filming the Jugband promo.

Whether by choice or not knowing what else to do with them, Syd wanted the Salvation Army band to play whatever they wanted. Norman Smith thought their part should be scored, so it was he, not the rest of the band members who had a problem with it. Norman and Syd disagreed and it was left that two versions would be recorded. Syd, tired of arguing, left the building, and Smith finished the track. HTH :)
