Pink Floyd never "sold out" after the Gini episode until Roger Waters was no longer a "part" of the group.

I am not sure if I would have agreed to do what they did. I probably would not have done it again.

I never liked the term "sell out" because that implies that money is the only motivation. I never thought they "sold out" in 1975 when they signed a big record deal or in 1994 when they had VW as an endorser for part of that tour. In both cases having big endorsements I'm sure off-set the tremendous costs involved in touring as well as afforded them crucial studio time.

Well, it's definitely a great photo shoot! (See the '94 Meddle CD, etc.) 8)

The band agreed to allow Gini, a French soft drink company, to sponsor a multi-city mini-tour of France in mid-1974. It was their first taste of "corporate sponsorship" (unheard of in '74), and at first the band thought it was a good idea...according to Nick Mason they thought they were taking Gini for a ride, because after all the fans would supposedly be charged less for concert tickets. The band was a bit naive about the entire experience, it never occured to anyone that their integrity might seem compromised. Roger said "in the beginning it was as if we were winning a prize. They wanted to give us fifty thousand pounds to take our photograph. It was only later that I told myself: Who needs that?"
The band ended up donating their windfall to charity. Roger's song that was never released, "Bitter Love", was a reference to the setting of the band's Gini ads. David said, "we never tasted the f****** drink anyway." :)

For the crybabies:

Btw...Dave also donated the VW Golf windfall to charity as well.

Business and music are a funny thing. They certainly help each other out but "feel" like polar opposites. I think business and music can mix together fine so long as the business does not influence the music and it is the music that influences the business!! ££££ $$$$

This is quite a good link to some pictures of roger and nick messing around backstage before the infamous Montreal (spitting) concert.
