Incarceration Of A Flower Child

Post by J Ed »

yesterday I found a copy of Marianne Faithfulls Vagabond Ways
which features a Roger Waters song, "Incarceration Of A Flower Child"
for some reason this album was very hard to find, though its very recent (2000)
I think this is rogers only appearance ever outside his own records
he's credited with bass synth on the song, though theres a lot of musicians on that track, and a lot of synths, so it hard to hear exactly what he's doing
the very last note is sort of a Flashlight-style stackedMoog sound, so maybe thats him? one can only speculate
Guy Pratt(!) is also credited with co-writing one song though he does not contribute musically
Daniel Lanois is all over it, and she does a cover of Leonard Cohens "Tower of Song"

not really one of her best albums Ive heard (those would be Broken English and Strange Weather)
but some material I read online suggests that Rogers song is in fact a highlight of her current stage act
it is sort of a sequel to "Sister Morphine"

some other stuff Ive read suggest he wrote it way back in 1967
but this seems unlikely, just compare it to "Take Up Thy Stethoscope"!
this is a very good song, "a haze of good dope and cheap wine" "...and three square sedations a day"
pity its so hard to find

this site claims theres going to be a live album/DVD including this song, anybody know if that ever came out?

I don't really have any opinion about the album or the song... but it sure is funny having an album with both Roger and Guy Pratt on it. That's just plain weird

EDIT: incarceration etc... isn't that the song with the ""do you remember me, how we used to be, do you think we should be closer?" line from Your Possibles Pasts (TFC)?

Do you remember me?
How we used to be?
Helpless, and happy and blind
Sunk without hope
In a haze of good dope
And cheap wine

Laying on the living floor
On those Indian tapestry cushions you made
Thinking of calling our first born Jasmine or Jade

Don't do it!
Don't do it!

Don't do it!
Don't do it to me

Don't think about it!
Don't think about it!
Don't think about it!
Don't think about what it might be

Don't get up to open the door
Just stay with me here on the floor
It's gonna get cold in the 1970s

You wouldn't listen
You thought you knew better
You'll just have to speak to that man
Please believe me
I'll visit whenever I can

There in your little white room
With no windows
And three square sedations a day
You plead with the doctor

Whose running the show
Please don't take Jasmine away
And leave me alone

Don't do it!
Don't do it!
Don't do it!
Don't do it to me

Don't think about it!
Don't think about it!
Don't think about it!
Don't think about what it might be

Don't get up to open the door
Just stay with me here on the floor
It's gonna get cold in the 1970s

Do you remember me?
How we used to be?
Helpless, and happy and blind
Sunk without hope
In a haze of good dope
And cheap wine

Now in your little white room
With no windows
And three square sedations a day
You plead with the doctor
Whose running the show
Please don't take Jasmine away
And leave me alone

I have only heard the song recently...I like it, but don't like it. I like Broken English, but found I of a Flower Child too much...maybe I'm having trouble dealing with the thought that enteres my mind that she sounds like a has been groupie, sad, like a Billie Holiday kind of thing...I suppose that is the point in some ways.

I was thingking the other day how much she sounds the same as she always did.

There are also some of her march shows on Dime, Roger is credited somewhere but not for this song - she says he wrote the song for her.

I couldnt agree more. I mean, she's got an...alright voice, but a song of this caliber, real quality lyrics deserves Waters singing it. I just think of Your Possible Pasts when I hear this song, and it seems like a rape to hear this, well, quite worn and... hoarse voice singing. Its like watching Roger's lips move but hearing her voice emerge (dont start in on the inevitable "lYp SIncKHIng loL!!!!111111!1" accusations, i'm using poetic liscense here), and I think if everyone on the board wrote a letter to Roger and asked him to record this song, he'd probably not do it, but it'd make us feel better, anyway.
