Just because he sounds battered live doesn't mean he can't get the right sound out by recording a song's backing track and then trying again and again with vocal overdubs.
On that note, be glad he's not lip-syncing.

Seeing as how the OAI project is over, I think it's very heavily under construction (assuming it ever was). That might even be why he didn't accept that invitation to one of Roger's shows with Nick; he was busy recording. (I don't think Rick is quite as lazy as Dave and Roger when it comes to this kind of thing.)
