Jimmy Page is quoted as saying in the 2nd booklet of the
new Zeppelin DVD: "[Earl's Court 1975] was the first time that back
projection had been employed at a rock concert".........
Hmmmmm! Well if he meant that it was the first time a live camera
set-up was projected onto screens at a show,I have no evidence to
refute it.As for "Back Projection"...Well! I think another band beat
out Zep by at least one year...I think!

Still,I do recommend the Zep DVD though...And I hope our boys
can return the favour to us in the same fashion some day.
(And when I say "return the favour",I mean ALL the rare stuff!
I do thank you for what's IS coming out in the near future!)
And just remember Roger,Dave,Rick & Nick - I'm 43 and I'm
starting to get fatigued at trying to catch up with the sun!

Yeah, the Zep DVD is great. I noticed that too, when I read the booklet. I'm pretty sure that The Floyd used back projection films before Zep did.

Well, we will be getting some Floyd on DVD soon. "Live in Pompeii" (The Directors Cut) comes out in October, and "The Making of the DSOTM", a 50-min 'Classic Albums' documentary that aired on the BBC comes out in the fall too, I think. Hopefully sometime soon after, we'll see "PULSE".

The Floyd unveiled their circular back projection screen during the
small 1974 Tour which,I believe,covered England & France

The new Zeppelin DVD is simply amazing, as is their new 3-CD live album! (How the heck were they able to get such great sound out of such old recordings?!?!??!! Truly remarkable)

I highly recommend picking up both of them if you like to rock hard every now and then...

BTW, Jimmy Page runs circles around David Gilmour in a live setting.

John Bonham was probably the greatest drummer of all-time.

True that! :P

Well, it is two different guitar styles. Jimmy is faster & can be very sloppy, David is slower & more melodic.

I don't think David set out to perform in the way Jimmy did.And I
regard David as a slow hand guitarist ala Eric Clapton.
Jimmy is a great guitarist but the other Yardbird Jeff Beck
outshines them all.

As a former Drummer,I too think Bonham's work is phenomenal.
The version of "Moby Dick" from Royal Albert is far superior to
that on "Song Remains the Same" Movie.
But I still take Ian Paice over John for drumming.Ian has a bit
more of a Jazzy feel in his technique.

Not much about Floyd here I realize! Sorry!

I just think Page does a better job of performing his studio work live than Gilmour. In the studio, I think they are both grand. Performing live, Gilmour just doesn't compare to Page IMO.

I cant post what I think... lol... I guess I just regard Pink Floyd too high. I think Brian May from Queen is better than Page. But thats just me-

I would somewhat disagree about Jimmy running circles around Dave live. Let's keep in mind that Jimmy was often too wasted to play at concerts...

John Bonham, YES!

As for Page vs. Gilmour, do not agree with that. David Gilmour may not always be on vocally live, but his guitar playing has always been flawless. Page on the other hand, as great as I do think he is, was just never as good live. Take The Song Remains the Same for example. They did not play that show as well as they could have at all.

These are of course only my opinions.

Depends on the time period your talking about really, Jimmy Page was pretty much perfect every night up to before the US 73 tour. After that he started to get very inconsistant maybe because of the drugs or maybe just because Zep just didnt play as much live after 73. Gilmour was alot more consistant if you ask me never really having an off night(well on guitar anyway) although rarely reaching the same heights as page. I think its a mistake to claim that Page could only play superfast and Gilmour could only play slow though. Look at some of the acoustic tracks from earls court on the DVD page is alot more layed back and barely makes a single mistake, In Gilmours case look at the live versions of SOYCD part 8 from 77 some really intense guitar playing that sounds almost Santana esque.

Lets hope the sucess of the Zep DVD and CD kicks the floyd into action as its pretty feeble if you ask me that we have no offical live floyd stuff from 69 until 80. If the recordings are out there I think an "evolution of DSOTM" release (say with 1 disk made up of stuff from 72 and 1 with stuff from 73-75) would sell by the truckload.

How about Jimmy Page compared to Ritchie Blackmore?
That was the big debate amongst my friends and I in the 70's!
Being a Purple fan - I took Ritchie over Jimmy.
Now! I'm all "growd up" and I appreciate them all!

But seriously! Do we really want to keep comparing Jimmy
and David!? Have you ever heard David speed up and down
the fret board like Jimmy!? I haven't.
Why not compare Eric Clapton to David Gilmour or some
other "slow hand" guitarists.

Okay how about this comparison:
The best guitarist to make that puckering look with his
mouth while playing a solo: winner-David Gilmour...
Yes! He's finally the clear winner!

Didn't Page (or his legion of worshippers) claim that he was the first to bowstring a guitar? Well, examine some early Floyd videos. It'll surprise you. Or maybe not.

Same here.

I guess it's no secret I don't like Zep, and haven't for ages.

Page was much better than Gilmour IMO, but i say this because at gigs i much prefer some bits of improvisation to a tightly choreographed piece. Though if Gilmour had imrpovised more on stage i feel it would be a lot closer, afterall, the true way to judge a guitarist is through their live performances.
