Doyle should stick to backing up Clapton. On the last tour Doyle sparked Clapton to a return to his '70s form.

But Doyle does not have the expressive style of playing that is needed for Floyd songs. Not many guitarists study from the "less is more" style that David has mastered. It's about the effortless bends and mindblowing sustain that David coaxes out a guitar. It's not about how many 16th note triplet runs you can do up and down the blues scale.

I recently saw Doyle's band on cable at a gig they did at the Great Wall of China. I wasn't impressed. He was playing too fast with not much feeling. I was rather disappointed given how well he has been playing with Clapton lately.

To me, SOUL is infinitely more important than technical ability.

To me, this whole poll is like asking the following question:

Who is the better runner?

The guy who can sprint half a mile in three minutes?

OR

The guy who takes eight minutes to run a full mile and is ready to go for another mile after that?

Doyle would be the first guy...Gilmour the second.

Are you sure that David Gilmour could run a mile in eight minutes?

Maybe if Polly wrote directions for him :D

Most likely, though, he'd either find a short cut...or hire someone else to do it for him, LOL

I'm guessing he would run to his car and drive quite slowly for eight minutes.

Hi

David Gilmour is one of (if not the) most influential and talented guitarists of our era.

Doyle is undoubtedly a good guitarist, but not in the same class as Gilmour.

Remember, there are millions of clever little sods who can play really fast and technical........ there are less than a hundred who can play slow, and have the feeling and emotion that makes people all over the world admire them.

Doyle does a good copy of Gilmour's parts, and he has a lot of skill, but he is not a soulful player in the way Gilmour, Clapton, Moore, Green, BB or SRV are (though he came from the SRV school or playing the blues).

Gilmour is best!!!!!

Exactly. And the best example of this is Yngwie Malmsteen who just shows off his skills in music theory and leaves SOUL way behind trying to catch up.

I just hate Doyle because of the stupid out-fit and chain he wore on the Roger Waters 2001 DVD  .
I think he was sollicitating that night for playing a gig with KISS or ABBA.

:? Probably Kiss
