"Great unsung hero of the Floyd"

Post by Kimon »

Peter Jenner describes Rick as "the great unsung hero of Floyd". I think he's right. Rick's works and contributions have been overlooked. People were more concetrating on David or Roger passing what he'd done. And it's a pitty. I'd like to know your opinion.

Definately. He contributed a lot to the Pink Floyd sound. What would songs like Shine On and Great Gig and Sheep be without him!

Of course, he is equally important.
I'm glad you agree.

Yeah, he had really awesome contributions to every album up to and including "Animals". After that, he was only really present for "The Division Bell". Rick was never a prog-type keyboard wizard, but had his own distinctive sound which added greatly to what the others were doing.

Yes. The majority of press concerns David and Roger. Rick's lovely!

Us and Them is one of the best rock songs ever written.

His use of jazz chords and voicings in his piano playing sets him apart from the prog rock wizards like Emerson and Wakeman. His musicality is understated and tasteful and the perfect counterpoint for Gilmour.

He's a genius. I can't wait for his new solo project.

Rick was always about developing textures, evocative melodic lines and moods rather than flashy rock keyboard solos. He excelled at what he did, and it is an integral part of the Pink Floyd sound.

All I can say is that without mr Wright's input their music would have lost its mysterious sound. And to me that is what attracts me to their music.

There were times when I thought Ricks playing was simplistic, (this from a guy who knows nothing about making music), but in the overall picture he has written and played some of the most wonderful music I have ever heard. He has created some masterpieces probably my favorite being the keyboards on Us and them and Great gig.

But then simplistic is not always a bad thing. One such example is the note that grabs my attention every time and really sets the scene for the song. one single key note that starts Echoes. Brilliant, simple and magnificent.

I don't say this about men very often, but I love Rick.
