Michael Kamen (check this out)

Post by Kimon »

As some of you may I know I'm from Greece. Greece's greatest composer ever, Manos Hadjidakis, recorded in 1970, at New York the album reflections. He chose a not well-known group to perform it. The Nwe York Rock and Roll ensemble. Key- member and keyboardist and oboeist of the group was Michael Kamen, known for his work with the floyd. I suggest you buy this record, if you find it, cause Hadjidakis iwas a really, really, really great composer. Michael Kamen is very good at keyboards, oboe and lead vocals on two songs, (Dedication, Noble Dame).

I believe you'll find that Vangelis is Greece's best ever composer ;)

My dear, believe me, I know a lot more of greek music than a non-greek. Vangelis is simply the most famous greek composer, cause his music is instrumental and easy for non-greek speaking people to understand. Hadjidakis is in Greece the most celebrated one.

I think both, because since I am Greek I have a better contact with greek music than an American or a French for example.

Do you doubt the fact that a Greek would know better both rock and traditional greek music than a person who does not live in Greece or ever has been? I suppose you don't.
So, I?m not all knowing (You know I didn?t say that) but it happens to know Greece better than a person who doesn?t live there. During my presence in the forum I might have irritated many but never offended any, like you did.
I know that I?m an asshole! You don?t have to remind me!
I'm ready to take greek music lessons whenever you wish!

I checked out his website and Hadjidakis sounds like an interesting fellow. I have an interest in Greek folk music because my father was from Greece and a musician also. For about 40 years he worked on the weekends playing clarinet in a band at Greek and Macedonian weddings. I also played with him from the time I was 16 until 23. So you could say that I have this music in my blood. From what I read it sounds like Hadjidakis has taken this traditional folk music and fused it to contemporary compositions. I'll have to check him out.

Exactly! Hadjidakis took folk music and added all the classical elements he had taken from Western Europe. He was close friend to Stravinsky and teacher of Nicola Piovani. I admire him very much. He collaborated with Quincy Jones for the album: "Jioconda's smile".
