I like Raging Bull if for no other reason than it has the line:
"oooh, you mean that time I had the guys head trapped in the door of my car out in the parking lot in front of hundreds of witnesses and was slamming the cardoor back and forth across the guys head? that time? heh heh, I almost forgot about that time! what was it you wanted to know about that time again?"

The first time I saw 'Holy Grail', I rolled around on the floor and wet my pants. It was a moment of ecstasy.

How can you not mention "Gangs of New York", and...sorry. My mind just blanked. :D

I really like King Of Comedy. Glad to see it get mentioned. I would have probably put it 4th or 5th if I made a longer list. I enjoyed Casino the first time but it's not one I've been able to sit through again. The story is much more brutal to me than Mean Streets or even Taxi Driver and Goodfellas. The direction is impressive.

"D'you fuck my wife?"

Raging Bull is pure self indulgence on DeNiro's part. However, it's a much more bearable self indulgence than New York New York. Less cocaine, perhaps? haha

I keep putting off watching it. I'll get back to you.

For me maybe part of its charm came from seeing it before Goodfellas. It was pretty much the first time i had ever watched a gangster film and seen that way of life depicted. I really liked the love story in there too. Agreed that it was a brutal film in places though.

Raging Bull i haven't seen in a long time; should really give it another spin.

The only "love story" that I can recall from Casino was the one between Sharon Stone and James Woods, both of whom were brilliant. The scene with Joe Pesci in the corn-field, was horrific. The sets, extras, and costumes are spot-on, I love Scorcese for his attention to detail. I think that Gangs of New York has some of the most beautiful cinematography I've seen, and Daniel Day Lewis is one of the most malevolent villian's that Scorcese has done. He is excellent. The only false note in the film, imo, is the ridiculous Irish accent that Cameron Diaz attempts.

Last film for me was Invictus. I was looking forward to this for one I’m a big rugby fan. It was directed by Clint Eastwood who I like a lot and it had one of the greatest black actors IMHO Morgan Freeman. Who was wonderful as Mandela.

Very disappointing Matt Damon who portrayed the part of François Pienaar looked nothing like him not even the same build which in rugby matters a hell of a lot, and his accent what a joke. Chester Williams had a few mentions as the only Black in the side. Nothing much about the rest, not even the bloke who scored the winning points. No mention at all of Joost van der Westhuizen who in the World Cup Competition played a blinder. The guy who played Jonah Lomu from the All Blacks was just plain stupid.

I guess I took it all too serious. To be fair if you’re going to make a film like this do it proper and not half assed.

Serious rugby fans will laugh at this mess. It was made just for entertainment and that’s all.

I typed it in the same way film critics used to write about Sidney Poitier. In his time he was considered the greatest black actor.

There happy now. [-X

Watched a couple of pretty good films the last few weeks: The White Ribbon, A Serious Man, Shutter Island and that flick with the sexy pierced skinny chick... Men Who Hate Women ...AKmorronicallyA The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo.

Funny how both Ribbon and Serious Man seem to be about the very same theme, but treated in two very different styles: uncertainty. Although the Coen brothers' film was overall a much more enjoyable and fun watch, Ribbon is that strange kind of film that you grow to enjoy more when it is over, the pieces of the puzzle start to spin in and out of place in your mind as the final credits roll and you begin to wonder what really happened at all.

Shutter Island I enjoyed too despite its formulaic structure. It has beautiful cinematography and a great effective soundtrack, and at times it really felt a lot more close to a horror picture than to a noir/detective/suspense one, which was kind of surprising. I didn't like the whole plot "twist", if you can call it that, but the movie overall was captivating and...

SPOILER SPOILER

I'm still wondering why Ruffalo calls Dicaprio Teddy at that last scene? ...could it be that ...that was his real name? <.8.>
