Rushmore...a Wes Anderson movie...I enjoyed it, though I liked The Aquatic Life With Steve Zissou more...haven't seen The Royal Tennenbaums yet...is it good?

It's all right, MG. Actually, I was just thinking the other night that Tennenbaums is probably my least favourite Anderson show. For me, a few of the main characters are a bit too eccentric, and not even in a good way, which I usually like. Plus, I'm not much of a Ben Stiller fan. On the upside, I did like Gwyneth Paltrow and Luke Wilson in it. And Gene Hackman has some funny lines.

On Saturday, my husband and I watched the Miami Vice movie. I liked Gong Li, but not much else. Also, I still can't see why so many women are attracted to Colin Farrell. I'm obviously missing something.

I enjoyed 'Royal Tenenbaums' the most of all Wes Anderson's movies... Great script, and the soundtrack (including Nico, Dylan, The Clash, The Ramones, Nick Drake, The Rolling Stones, and Elliot Smith) works with the story. Its ensemble cast interacts well; no one tries to upstage. I think it effectively creates a number of different moods.

I think Tanenbaums was the only one I saw from that director
really good ensemble cast, especially Hackman and Owen Wilson
though Pompeiis point about their individualistic eccentricities is true for me too
like theyre trying way too hard too make each character somehow quirky,
then theres the whole issue I always have with rich peoples "problems"
these characters have chauffeurs and real estate in the Upper East Side, I should feel sorry for them why?
but that Upper East Side scenery is beautifully filmed indeed, this is one of those movies where the city itself is a costar in the film, and like Amelie's Paris its a romanticized aspect of Manhattan that really only exists in the movies

I just watched the Deer Hunter (it probably was my 20th time) and it's still always so kick ass. Probably the best ever.

The actors are so incredible in that movie. Everyone of them. And the vietnam scene.... Aaarggh!

I had some Christmas money, so I went to the Boxing Day sales and picked up a few DVD's. Just watched Billion Dollar Brain. It was the only one of Michael Caine's Harry Palmer films I had not seen before, and I have to say, it was one of the weaker ones. Ken Russell's goofy direction style really didn't fit it. Still, it was entertaining enough.

The others, which I haven't watched yet are Doctor Who: Genesis of the Daleks and the Doctor Who boxed set of the Key to Time Collection. I've got some serious Tom Baker action coming up! :smt023

I got The Godfather Trilogy box and Disney's Silly Symphonies DVD this Christmas. I've only watched The Godfather so far - excellent stuff. The latter present has been hard to keep away from. Some of those shorts are pure art.

that sounds pretty good
I watched a documentary on Disney over christmess, emphasising Disneys european highart influences from all those old folk tales, preRaphaelite art, gothic cathedral design, expressionist filmmaking, surrealism, the list went on and on
Disney was himself such a plainspoken allamerican guy you would think any such connection was purely coincidental
but the filmmakers kept putting examples sidebyside and damned if he wasnt soaking up the hibrow culture while drawing his funny cartoony pics!

It's an excellent 2-disc set, except one needs to prepare for a few racial stereotypes as was common back in the day. The Big Bad Wolf dressing up as a Jewish peddler to fool the Three Little Pigs for instance. And the rarely-seen "Who Killed Cock Robin?" features some satire on the police force that is very out-of-character for Disney. Better have the complete shorts than the cut versions, though. Some are best seen as historic documents, while others prove that storytelling in today's cartoons has turned into utter crap.

I saw Longitude today, starring Jeremy Irons. Brilliant movie, long (around 200 minutes :o ) but very good. Anyone seen it here?

I saw the new version of Casino Royale a few weeks ago and thought it was absolutely fantastic. Finally a modern Bond film without lots of pointless gadgets! I hope they can keep the quality consistant with the sequels.
