Roger Waters basses

Post by DavidBarrett »

Everyone have seen the pic's where he's got the sunburst-colored Rickenbacker in the Syd-day's. He also had it in 1968.

Then he switched to a sunburst-colored Fender Precision bass with a black pickguard.
When did this happen?

Also in the Royal Albert Hall Rehearsal from April 14th 1969 he had some camouflage-colored Precision bass. I've seen it on another pic also.
When did he get this? He didn't seem to have it for such a long time, tough.

From 1966 to early 1970 he used Selmer or Vox amps or the equipment that they had at the place they were going to play, I think.

I really want to know!

The Ric was officially a Rose-Morris Model#1999, as it was a special-order for the UK importer. Later released in the US under the name 4001S. It's finish is known as Fireglo. This bass is seen on the back cover of Ummagumma, with the pickguard heavily damaged.

The sunburst P-Bass had a (faux)tortoise-shell pickguard, not black. Used at Pompeii.

there seems to be very little info on the Nazi camo P-Bass.

During this period I've usually seen him with WEM cabs.

Yeah, I knew that it wasn't a black pickguard on his sunburst P-bass, but I just didn't know how to spell that colour :P

Then I know that sometimes in the 70's Roger Waters used an Alembic pre-amp.
This was the pre-amp that David Gilmour and his tech. Phil Taylor tried on his leslie-effect. They did this in 1974 I think.

Do you know when he switched from Ric to P-bass?

He was seen with the Rickenbacker on 31th August 1968 at the Kastival 68 festival in Belgium. Then, on "Tous En Scene" in Paris on 7th September 1968 he had the sunburst P-bass!

They played a gig on 4th September too, but I doubt there's any pictures from that particular show.

The great thing about a P-Bass is they aren't very expensive. This one has the chrome bridge cover, it no longer has the chrome pickup cover like Roger uses, as I tend to play near the bridge. It has a J-Bass pickup added near the bridge. This pickup can be blended in for more treble bite, or turned off for the straight P-Bass tone.

No, of course not. Just thought some might be taken aback by the "backwards" photo. :)

Very cool bass. Sunburst Fenders look stunning; definitely the E-Type Jag of the guitar/bass world.

Nice PB Shaped Sound! Similar to my Jazz Bass :). Now i'm looking for a Roger-like all black PB with maple fingerboard. BTW, his bass is full stock? No upgrades, new pickups?

The Rickenbacker doesn't have a badly damaged Pickguard on Ummagumma, its just cracked a wee bit, with the cracks joining to pots for the two bottom controls, thus making it fall off.

Now don't stalk me whe n Isay this, but I'm sure I've seen a colour pick of Rog with the camo bass, and it had some luminous yellow on it.

Pompeii bass. How often to Precisions come with the pickup cover (the big clunking silver bit)?

Roger "the coolest sod in town" Waters getting it all groovy like with his Rickenbacker (before the damage).
