Well since we're talking about "Set The Controls",Why not cover
the other masterpiece of that era.
The best live versions,in my mind are from the Brighton Dome
and the Hollywood Bowl in 1972.The echoing guitar feedback
sequence at the end of the 2nd Movement must have sounded
amazing travelling in quad around the Dome and the Bowl.
I think when one thinks of the Floyd between 1968 and 1972
(pre-Dark Side),you think of those 3 Compositions:Saucerful,Careful
with that Axe,Eugene and Set the Controls... (Of course I'm
not forgetting Echoes and One of these Days..)

i think it's kinda cool to see just how much the floyd changed in those few years. you got Piper, which is completely , then ASOC which is more melodic and mellow. then it's kinda like "where did ummagumma come from????" and atom heart mother. their whole musical style drastically changed in just a few years. that's why i think they've been around so long, they changed their sound over time.

Yup, Pink Floyd were never repetitive & that is what kept them so interesting.dove wrote:i think it's kinda cool to see just how much the floyd changed in those few years. you got Piper, which is completely , then ASOC which is more melodic and mellow. then it's kinda like "where did ummagumma come from????" and atom heart mother. their whole musical style drastically changed in just a few years. that's why i think they've been around so long, they changed their sound over time.
About A Saucerful of Secrets. I really dig this song. A nice sounds collage with a great climax. The best version I heard so far what the Filmore Wet show in 1970. A 19 minute version & it was a fatastic performance by the band. They always perform their songs better live!

That song has every thing a song should have - the nice gentle start of "something else" that leads into the repeted drum and feed back section of "Syncopated Pandemonium". The keyboards of "Storm signal" are just fantastic and lead you to probably the best end of any of their songs. Davids vocal on "Celestial Voices" is so solum it could reduce you to tears

Saucerful-Supplemental
I know Roger has stated that the composition has a war theme
to it,but I always liken it to the stages of a Thunderstorm.
Part One:Something Else-The coming storm,Rising Swirling Winds,
Thunder & Lightning(Cymbal Smashes)
Part Two:Syncopated Pandemonium:The Storm itself,Heavy Rain,
Thunder,Lightning,Winds
Part Three:Storm Signals:The rain dissapates but the Lightning
and Thunderclaps stays for a brief moment.
(David Gilmours short guitar feedback
sequence)
Part Four:Celestial Voices:After the storm,Clouds break,The sun
shines through with rays coming through
them.A Rainbow perhaps.
By the way, does anybody think of the Floyd's Stage lighting when
they see those rays of sunlight shining through the clouds or
perhaps through the trees? I do!!!!

BMET, just as a tip, when typing your posts, you dont need to press the return key when you come to the end of a line in the box you are typing in. Just keep typing and it will format itself.bmet wrote:I know Roger has stated that the composition has a war theme
