Well, it can be "blamed" on the fact that he was trained a jazz-musician :)... Thanks, Keith.

Yes, that is definitely Rick! I have another photo from the same session, but it is saved on my work computer. When you see his face from the front (versus the profile) there is no doubt!

Yes! That's the one! :D I may even have one more. To my knowledge, they are some of the earliest published photos of Rick available as a musician....

I have a photo of Rick playing an acoustic guitar, but it is most likely from the 1990s or thereabouts. I wish I had access to my work computer! :x :D

It's nothing strange knowing that he played the complete brass section on 'Biding My Time'...

The man is immensely talented, no question. He cannot even read music and yet can play so many instruments! A gift? Hell yes, and so underrated I tell you!

Yes he is. Pink Floyd wouldn't have been the band it was without him. He might not be the biggest name in the group but in his own quiet way he's contributed an awful lot to their music. I think it's no coincidence that David took him on tour last year.

I'm surprised he can't read music. Didn't he study music after he dropped out of the Regent Street Poly?

My understanding is that it is a talent that was completely self-taught. Totally "by ear" and through his appreciation and listening to music. That is one of the reasons that I think so highly of him! He absolutely cannot read music (and readily admits it), though over time he has learned the musical keys, chords, etc. He is so awesome and so totally talented!

If a musicians knows about different key signatures then they will be able to read music. Otherwise there is no point in learning them!

Read my post again carefully....at the onset of Rick's musical career, everything he learned was through innate ability or through association with other music previously heard.

He only learned later that certain sounds were the various musical keys...it was not ever taught!

Ah, right. That would explain why he was never quite as good as the keyboard players from most other bands of the era.
