Syd Barrett's music sucks.....

....all of the boring, standard things out of the music of this era and gives us something different, something much better and deeper. He was a genius without even knowing it, writing his songs in a way that went against every convention of modern Western music but still fitting together and making sense. That's what's truly amazing about his music, how he did such amazing things with such a limited understanding. Regardless of how much formal training he had, he still possessed a rare musical instinct that enabled him to do these things. That type of gift only comes along once in a lifetime.

You didn't fool me for a minute! It is true, his musical style was definitely unique and innovative, but Syd's biggest problem, if you can call it a problem is that he did not enjoy the fact as a result of having a hit of sorts, you had to play that hit or your other hits over and over again. I think syd's motto was "yep, it's done, it's out of the way, I don't need to do that again".

In saying that however, his music has moved me like no other performer has done before. You can have all the musical training in the world, but when your humanity comes through your music, it is a rare quality that happens in only a few incidences in a lifetime.

Yeah, Syd firmly held the belief that once something was done, it was done, never to be revisited. There was something that deeply bothered him about looking back. Hopefully, his sister will shed more light on that at some point.

I could never bash Syd no matter what. I saw someone post a similar type of thing in a bulletin on Myspace, with an apparently negative beginning, but the body of the message was really nice. I figured I would try something similar here to get peoples' attention. It's been a lot of fun seeing peoples' reactions though, usually along the lines of, "I was so ready to tell you to go screw yourself until I read the post!"
