what are these "Barn Jams"?

Post by J Ed »

theres supposed to be three "Barn Jams" included in versions of this Gdask album
anybody watched them yet? what are they?
I noticed the Island Jam sequence in the Royal Albert Hall DVD is captioned "in The Barn" or something, so is it more of the same?
and what is this Barn? another property on Sir Daves Estates?

Yeah, they are indeed jams inside a barn owned by DG I would suppose because Polly is walking around playing house. It has a nice shot of the outside of the barn, which looks like a little wooden add-on to an old house and it's decorated with white strung lights inside on the walls. There is only DG, GP, SD, and RW in the barn jams and no John Carin or Phil Manzanera. On one song you find guy pratt on the guitar and DG on drums. It's pretty good stuff! I was pleasently suprised how much I like them.

I like the barn jams. Sort of a little intimate gift for fans. Not something that stands alone.

My guess is that these are the last live performances we will ever see of Rick. He looks rather unwell in them, but it could be me projecting, given his untimely death.

One thing that I don't like, is that Rick has one little scraggly hair on his neck that the camera focuses on, then quickly corrects...wtf?

if theyre more from the same session that produced Island Jam theyd be 21/2 years old
how would we describe these three jams?
is Island Jam one of them? that was sort of slow blues with lots of organ if I recall correct
are they all basically the same thing?

Yes. Basically the same bluesy melodies with one of them stepping out with a solo... mainly Dave, and mostly leading
into unknown directions... thats what jam's all about.
Island jam happend during or at the end of recording of the oai album and these so calledb barn jams happend in february 2007 I think. (correct me someone if I'm wrong)

I watched the easter egg section on the Barn Jams and it sounds like ALOT of jamming was going on, not just the three bits we see. Makes me wonder if another album was in the works the way David and Rick were talking about it. Perhaps I will make a Youtube clip of it for those who don't have the DVD's.

They did a whole new set of Barn recordings that is separate from the one on RTN. I believe the Mule has the correct year of Feb. 2007...or maybe even 2008! It says on Dave's website somewhere...but, I am too damn lazy to find it.

BTW, Dave is not a bad Pink Floyd style drummer...why did they keep Nick around again?

Because if he had got rid of Nick and PF was just himself and session players then it would resemble a certain Axl Rose move... "Keep the name even though its only me."

When I first read about these back when Remember That Night came out, I imagined that they were jams taking place inside of "The Barn", a studio owned by Trey Anastasio and used heavily by Phish. Imagine David Gilmour and Rick Wright jamming with Trey Anastasio, Jon Fishman, and Mike Gordon... that would be epic.
